Default Re: Cannot update windows

Loh Hon Chun,

Open Internet Options in the Control Panel. If you're NOT running a
proxy server, click the Connections tab.
Click the LAN Settings button. If any boxes are checked there, UNcheck
them them. Click OK.
Click the Advanced tab. Scroll down to HTTP 1.1 settings. UNcheck the
box next to " Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections ".
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Under Java ( or Microsoft VM ) which java package is installed ?
If the Java (Sun) JRE is installed make sure that the box next to it is
checked. If the Microsoft VM is installed, make sure that the JIT
compiler for virutal machine is enabled.
If BOTH are installed, uncheck the Microsoft VM boxes and make sure that
the Java (Sun) " Use JRE .. " is checked. Click Apply, OK to make the
setting stick.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF that doesn't resolve the issue, try reregistering these files.
Go to Start, Run, type in

regsvr32 softpub.dll

Press Enter or click OK.
Do the same for :

Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll, Dssenh.dll, Rsaenh.dll, Gpkcsp.dll,
Sccbase.dll, Slbcsp.dll, Mssip32.dll, and Cryptdlg.dll

If that doesn't resolve the issue, download and install Windows Script
5.6 for XP/Win 2K :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other possible causes could be Norton Internet Security, an entry in the
HOSTS file that has a static IP address for Windows Update, or a
security program ( popup and/or script blocker, or Bugmenot, etc. ) that
is blocking access to downloading from WU.

Default Re: Cannot update windows

I have the same problem & get these errors:
Following updates were not installed:
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 & WinHTTP 5.11
(KB842773)
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
These are required for getting critical updates, so I need to find out how
to allow them to install.
The suggestion to set Internet Options did not help. My options were already
as suggested.

Dear Sir,

The problem is still there. It seems to occur only when I am connected to my

could be the problem?

I looked at previous log you posted and noticed the 0x80072EE2 error. Also are you
using a router, below might be of interest. Suggestions only.

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x80072EE2 or 0x80072EFD error.
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...=en&IsMu=False

Finding a solution for the 0x80072EE2 error
http://www.updatexp.com/0x80072ee2.html

You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" error message, an "Error 0x80072EFD" error message,
or an "Error 0x80072f76" error message if you try to use the Microsoft Windows Update
Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024502d error.

<snip of relevant part> I was getting the 0x80072EE2 message on a machine this
evening. I never had a problem with it.

I tried all of your suggestions to no avail. However, in a post from several months
ago, someone mentioned an MTU seating on a router. I had upgraded the firmware on my
home router several days ago and left the MTU set at the default of 1500. Come to
think of it, my Internet connection seemed a little sluggish since I upgraded the
firmware.

I reset the MTU to 1492, and voila! Windows Update works again.

I write this post so that someone else doesn't overlook a simple solution to a very
frustrating problem.

Router / Firewall / Wireless Router MTU ==> 1492 or less <snip>

Result posted by "tinman"
<snip> The problem is with the AOL connection. Basically you need to amend the MTU
settings of the WAN down to 1400. You can experiment and see if it works going up to
1460 but it doesn't work past that. <snip>
