Hi,
I found a site (actually not "found", my friend told me about it) that solved my update problem. BITS refused to start and Windows Update of course failed every time. I used this program and clicking of "Phase 1" solved the probem. Took me about 30 secs to fix the problem with that program. Seems like it fixes at least BITS, but if I understood the explanation on the site, it includes also other fixes for the problem. It is freeware and can be found here: http://www.sci.fi/~borg/fixwindowsupdate/ -- J.K. |

Despite your testimonial, there is no description whatsoever of what this
executable does nor is there any Privacy statement on any of the webpages. Blindly trusting such an anonymously posted fix is quite risky and, while it may fix your problem, installing/using it may give you unwanted hiajckware or cause other problems. I would not use this fix. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), AH-VSOP J.Kilpinen wrote: > Hi, > I found a site (actually not "found", my friend told me about it) that > solved my update problem. I know the author personally. His contact info can be found on his sites. (http://inttter.net or http://www.sci.fi/~borg) Do a Google-search with his other freeware RamBooster. I am sure you'll find him a person you can trust. If you have any doubts, I am sure he does not mind even even if you call him and ask. There is absolutely no spy/adware or BHO's hidden in the program. He is strongly against those and works in computer security business. The program is going to be listed on download.com next month. -- J.K. |

Tell him to clearly state what the executable does (how it does it, and if it's possible to reverse what it does) on his pages and to post a clearly worded Privacy Statement. > The program is going to be listed on download.com next month. Not impressed. Many spurious & spyware-laden apps have been and are offered at download.com. -- ~PA Bear |

What is a Privacy statement? I have never seen such a thing on any Finnish website. Clearly worded? Maybe you noticed while reading that site, that the author is Finnish, like me. Many of us can speak/write English also. Far from perfect English, but most people understand most if it, I hope. I myself cannot speak/write English well nor does my cousin (The author of that program)...so.... "clearly worded"...that might be difficult without a professional help. Especially when one does not even know what is a Privacy Statement. Has it something to do with laws in USA? I know it has nothing to do with European/Finnish laws. But I do know that spreading viruses/adware/spyware without letting the person who installs the program know about it, is a serious crime here. Maybe my cousin knows better about this "Privacy Statement"-thingy. I'll show him this thread as soon as he comes home. > Not impressed. Actually this program was not made to impress you. But in hope tohelp people with Windows Update-problems. > Many spurious & spyware-laden apps have been and are offered at > download.com. Their policy doesn't allow that. They scan each and every program and if a program contains viruses/ad/spyware/BHO's etc, they don't accept it. You really should report those programs if you know any. Quotes: " In order to ensure that our download directories are trusted, safe, and secure, we have a strict Adware and Spyware Policy." ( http://www.upload.com/1200-21-916200.html?tag=nav ) "CNET Download.com's goal is to provide a download experience that is trusted, safe, and secure. We will not list software with components, such as spyware and adware, that might interfere with a user's control and privacy. ( http://www.upload.com/1200-21-5143026.html?tag=help ) -- J.K. |

In English version press F1 and look in Index for Privacy, Overview. Alternatively, assuming the order of the menu items is at least the same in each localized version of IE, enter the equivalent of the View menu and cursor up twice. That should open what is called the Privacy Report. If an item has a Privacy statement you could read it by using that dialog (e.g. by using the Summary button). HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |
