I have 5 WIN2K SP4 PCs on which I uninstalled NORTON ANTIVIRUS 2004 and
installed AVG. Some weeks have gone by and I noticed that the WINDOWS
UPDATES were NOT working. There are 3 WIN2K SP4 PCs that are still
running NAV 2004 and their updates are working fine.

Have tried all suggestions on the Windows Update Troubleshooter page.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

The update page takes too long to scan; but does find updates to
download then takes even longer (15 min)on DSL to "install" and finally
ends by displaying message that the installation failed.

According to that log, BITS-service fails to start.

Did you read this site I mentioned earlier?

"Sometimes things may go wrong, BITS stops working and you are not able
to update your Windows anymore automatically or from Windows
Update-website. This often occurs when you uninstall certain
antivirus/internet security programs."

And you just uninstalled an antivirus program. Try FixWindowsUpdate.

This error 0x80246008 can be caused by multiple factors. When the issue occurs again,
I suggest we perform the following steps to troubleshoot this
issue:

Step 1:

Install MSI 3.1 via the following link:

Please install Windows Installer 3.1, restart and try the updates again. If possible,
please disable all firewall or anti-virus applications first.

Step 2:

Go to Start -< Run, type in Services.msc and press Enter. Please check the following
services:

"Remote Procedure Call" (RPCSS) should be enabled, Automatic
"COM+ Event System" (EventSystem) should be enabled, Manual
"System Event Notification Service" (SENS) should be enabled, Automatic
"Volume Shadow Copy" (VSS) should be enabled, Manual
"Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" (SWPRV) should be enabled, manual.

Step 3:

Go to Start -> Run, type in Reghedit and press Enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\SvcHost

In the right pane, double-click to open the netsvcs key. Under Value Data, add BITS
to the list of services. Click OK. Exit the registry. Restart the
system and check out Windows update again. If still fails, proceed to Step 4:

Step 4:

Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll. Click OK.
Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll. Click OK.

Step 5:

Go to command prompt (Start -> Run -> type in CMD and click OK), run the following
command

Reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\BITS\Parameters /v
ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

(All one line. Since this command is complex, please copy it and right click on the
Command Prompt window -> Paste, then Enter.)

(Additional information added to original posting: The above command may wrap to more
than one line therefore you may have to copy the same to notepad so that it's one
line - including any spaces in the line)

Then please restart the PC and retry Windows Update

If the above command does not work, please try the following again:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestor e\FilesNotToBackup

Restart the PC and retry Windows Update. If still no success, go to Step 6:

Step 6:

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

(Note: Application Data is a hidden folder, so ensure you go to My Computer ->
Tools -> Folder options -> View, check Show hidden files/folders)

Delete the Downloader folder.

No problem. Happy to help.
I told my cousin, who is the author of that program, what you said and
he said that it feels good to hear that, because he made that program to
help people with this problem which seems to be quite common.

He has received also some feedback into his e-mail and looks like it has
helped several people since I posted the link here.

Then.. to repeat what has already been suggested, and I hope you send it to
your cousin...

Please post detailed documentation for the program that tells us exactly what
it does to the website where the utility is offered.

For one, if we know what it does, and it 'automates' something we're already
telling people to do manually, it will be much easier for /everybody/. Plus,
we'll send people to his website, rather than posting manual instructions in
the newsgroup -- which is a plus for your cousin.

For two, if the utility does something we do /not/ know about.. it would be
very useful to the community to know what the fix(es) actually are that we
don't know about.

For three.. it's the /right/ thing to do if your cousin wants to establish a
reputation for being a reliable software developer.

He has been a system designer/developer and software developer for 22
years. Working and selling services for major companies, so I guess he
has that reputation already.
