Default Cannot perform Windows & IE update

I try to update Windows 98 and IE 6.0 but I get this error: 0x800A1391.
I follow the online help tips at MS -- to no avail.

Back in October 2005, my PC was flooded by a number of worms, trojans,
hijackers, dialers, etc. I installed an anti-spyware program recoomended over
the Internet: Spyware Detector. The anti-spyware was successful at removing
the pests from my computer. The application is ill-behaved, however. It
changes many essential settings without permission. One of the worst things
Spyware Detector does: It changes the boot drive designation from something
like drive D to drive D. (D dot). many batch files and shortcuts no longer
work, because they point to a non-existent drive D (without a dot)! The
company that makes Spyware Detector does not answer my concerns. The bone
heads are also cowards! The application is not loaded, still many things do
not work properly on my PC. But the worst thing is that I can no longer check
for Windows/IE updates!

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

You receive an "Initialization error 0x800A1391" error message and the
Windows Update Web site does not appear:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;836961

1. Uninstall Spyware Detector (cf.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm) & reboot.

2. If you're running Zone Alarm Pro, seek and install any updates as ZA's
Privacy Alerts is known to cause this problem. If the behavior persists,
try disabling ZA before going to Windows Update.

3. Hijackware still present on the machine may be causing the problem.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Thanks, Bear. Looks like lots of headaches ahead for me! Nothing simpler,
though? Microsoft indicates that is working something different on the
800A1391 error.
I uninstalled anti-spyware -- still not working. My PC also appears to be
free of hijackers or other pests -- still can't do the updating.
