Default Can't boot to desktop after downloading and installing SP2.

Hi,

I've twice successfully downloaded and installed SP2. Upon re-starting the
computer for the first time after the install. The Winows XP logo appears
with the progress meter at the bottom then it reboots all over again and does
the same thing, without every being able to finish booting and getting to the
desktop. The computer will keep booting over and over unless I hit 'F8' and
go to 'Safe Mode'. I've used system restore to undo the SP2 download, and
when that's done, XP successfully loads without any issues. I've tried
downloading SP2 in Safe Mode with Networking but it says that the webpage
cannot be viewed. Anybody have any ideas? Or am I doomed to run XP without
SP2? thanks in advance.

Hi Blasi,

See if the information in either of these MSKB articles is helpful in
resolving the problem:

System with the Mpegport.sys driver repeatedly restarts after you install
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=878474

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
2005, your computer restarts continuously

Patti,
I tried out both links. I don't have any scanner or scanner software on my
PC. Particularly UMAX drivers. I did an extensive search and followed the
links instructions. I also don't have any issues pertaining to the DVD DEM
issue. Please advice.

Well, what I would do next, prior to attempting the SP2 install again, is
run a thorough virus scan after ensuring that your antivirus program is
up-to-date. I would then run an online scan, such as:

TrendMicro's Housecall
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
or
Panda Software's ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm

After that, ensure that your PC is free from other malware. Check out the
information here:
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

When reasonably certain that your PC is free from virus/trojans and other
malware, attempt to install SP2 again.
