Default Windows update and secure server problems

Every time that I try to update Windows (I currenlty have SP2) I receive the
error message: [Error number: 0x80072EFD].

Further, I cannot update my spyware definitions (neither Spybot or MS
AntiSpyware will update).

Further, I cannot access FTP sites that require a login and pwd.

In STARTUP under MSCONFIG, I only have the following loaded:
TPHKMGR
TP4EX
SHSTAT
QCWLICON
MSTMON_Q
GCASSERV
EXEJMNAP
ATIPTAXX
PWRMONIT

I am using an IBM Thinkpad R50 notebook computer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin
