I have been trying to install update:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework KB886903

for about a week now. I have on automatic update and I have tried to install
it through the microsoft.com page. Does anyone know how I can get this to
intall and if now how can I get it off my list so it doesn't try to install
it everytime I turn off my computer.

Thanks for all of your help.

I can't answer your question, but I'm having the same problem with this
update, since june of this year. It actually keeps my computer from shutting
down. I hope someone has the answer..

I did note that the update indicates the file size to be 0 kb, which doesn't
make since if the update contains data to be downloaded...(?) Check it out,
and see if I am correct or just stupid. Good Luck

Thanks, my wife thinks my mind is 0 kb. I have a message to Microsoft (Tech)
to attempt a solution. If they don't offer a fix, I will take the laptop to
my computer guru (professional MS certified)....and will post the outcome.

I have been having the same problem. Since Dec. 1, so I guess I donn't have
it as bad. Maybe if everyone who has this issue consolidates their
discussions Microsoft will notice and actually solve the problem.
Looking forward to any solution. I hate turning off my somputer without
shutting down.

Default RE: Updates Were Unable To Install Successfully

The proposed fix by Microsoft is rather lengthy. I can forward the email that
I received from Microsoft Technical staff, but I don't want to retype the two
pages of steps to follow, and risk getting it wrong....then the problem might
be compounded.
I haven't tried the manual fix yet (too busy), but really appreciate the
comprehensive attention that the Tech offered. If you are interested in the
suggested solution, respond to my email address. That's the only way I know
to share the info from Microsoft, since I can't forward or attach to this
Board.

Dear Charlie,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is
Simon
and I am glad to work with you. To contact me, you may directly send
emails
to my account: v-30simw@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID in the
subject line.

From your description, I understand that Security Update for Microsoft
..NET
Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) failed to download and
install over 20 times in the latest several months and the computer is
very
slow while shuting down. I am sorry for the inconvenience that you have
enc
ountered. Please be assured that I will try my best to help you resolve
the
issue in a timely manner. However, if I have misunderstood your
concern,
please feel free to correct me.

Description of .NET Framework
=========================

The .NET Framework is the programming model of the .NET environment for
building, deploying, and running Windows, Web-based, and smart client
applications and XML Web services. It standardizes data types and
communications protocols so that components created in different
languages
and running on d
ifferent machines can interoperate.

Based on my research, the issue happens when .Net Framework component
was
damaged. Let us refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this
issue:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility
============================================
1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...8-80E8-983A48D
5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Save the file to your computer.
3. Install this tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .Net Framework
========================
1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.
2. See if you can find .Net Framework software. If so, remove them.
3. Restart the computer and see if the problem still exists.

For more information, please refer to:
-----------
Title: Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Link: <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301>

If you cannot uninstall .NET Framework, please refer to the following
Article to remove it manually.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320112

After that, please restart the computer and perform the following
suggestions to reinstall .Net framework and .Net framework 1.1 SP1

Step 3: Install .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package and .Net
Framework 1.1 SP1
================================================== ===============
1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1
Redistributable
Package from the following link and save it to the C drive (C:\)

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...e-90e3-bf8203e

2. When the File download window appear, please click Save button, and
then
local to a direction in Save as windows to download the Microsoft .Net
Framework 1.1 setup file in the local computer, and double-click the
..Net
Framework file to manually install them one by one.

If you encountered a problem when installing .NET Framework 1.1, you
can
refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

How to troubleshoot Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installation issues

However, if the issue persists, please capture a screenshot when you
encounter an error message:
================
1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2) Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.
3) In Paint, click Paste under the Edit menu, click Save under the File
menu, type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as

Actually this hasn't solved my problem, but one of these posters on this
thread was able to use the instructions and fix his problem with KB886903. I
think I have a more complex issue, and will post when solved.
Big thanks to Mr Wang with Msft
