Can anyone help?
I am running windows XP with IE V6 and have automatic updates turned on and are up to date. The file name for internet explorer now reads 6.0.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) - which Iam guessing is the result of an update. I have now problems with word and Norton anti virus programs. Word often states that I need IE V3 or greater to use certain functions. Norton states that I need V5.5 or greater. If I try to update IE from Norton disks it states that a higher version is already loaded. But it still does not recognise the file. Catch 22!! How can I change the internet explorer file name to the standard recognisable format? |

(Courtesey of MVP Mike Burgess) Several of these are known to cause the
problem: 1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off 2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content - "Allow All Scripts To Execute" Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS. 3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site. 4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site. 5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies. 6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info. 7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter 8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0 "[ 9) "Internet accelerator" applications - disable] -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) swanland66 wrote: > Can anyone help? > I am running windows XP with IE V6 and have automatic updates turned on > and > are up to date. > > The file name for internet explorer now reads > 6.0.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) - which Iam guessing is the > result of an update. > I have now problems with word and Norton anti virus programs. Checked your suggestions and none seem to be applicable.
Tried to remove NIS but window pops up saying IE V5.5 or greater is needed! Any more options you can suggest? Try the Clean Boot troubleshooting technique to see if you can identify what
third-party application that's loading at boot is causing the problem. Also try: IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > Enable third-party browser helper objects (uncheck & reboot). -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) swanland66 wrote: > Checked your suggestions and none seem to be applicable. > Tried to remove NIS but window pops up saying IE V5.5 or greater is > needed! > > Any more options you can suggest? > > "PA Bear" wrote: > >> (Courtesey of MVP Mike Burgess) Several of these are known to cause the >> problem: >> >> 1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking" >> and >> "Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off >> >> 2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content - >> "Allow All Scripts To Execute" Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 >> bit encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS. >> >> 3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains >> entries that are blocking access to the desired site. >> >> 4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the >> desired >> site. >> >> 5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies. >> >> 6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info. >> >> 7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter >> >> 8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt: >> >> [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet >> Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT >> 5.0 ">> >> [ 9) "Internet accelerator" applications - disable] >> >> -- >> ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) >> MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) >> >> >> swanland66 wrote: >>> Can anyone help? >>> I am running windows XP with IE V6 and have automatic updates turned on >>> and >>> are up to date. >>> >>> The file name for internet explorer now reads >>> 6.0.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) - which Iam guessing is the >>> result of an update. >>> I have now problems with word and Norton anti virus programs. For User-Agent problems I am now suggesting instead: http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx That gives both the *received* User-Agent string (which I have never really been clear that BrowserSpy gives <w>) and some key browser values in a capturable format. Torgeir & Robert, thanks for your input.
Visited "browserspy" and "fiddler tool" as suggested and returned the following reports. Fiddler tool- ASPNET's HTTPBrowserCapabilities object reports that based on the User-Agent, your Browser has the following capabilities: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type = IE6 Name = IE Version = 6.0 Major Version = 6 Minor Version = 0 Platform = WinXP Is Beta = False Is Crawler = False Is AOL = False Is Win16 = False Is Win32 = True Supports Frames = True Supports Tables = True Supports Cookies = True Supports VBScript = True Supports JavaScript = True Supports Java Applets = True Supports ActiveX Controls = True SecEnhanced. Browserspy - Basic Information Shows some of the basic information available in the browser. Variable Setting appName Microsoft Internet Explorer appCodeName Mozilla appVersion 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) appMinorVersion ; SP2; IE real version 6.0 - 6,0,2900,2180 UserAgent Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) Security Policy Property not supported or blank! Browser Name Internet Explorer 6 Operating System Windows - Windows XP Platform Win32 - Windows 32-bit platform CPU x86 - x86 Compatible processor (Intel, Cyrix, AMD, etc...) Online true - The system is in global online mode Connection Type modem - You are connected via a modem Vendor Property not supported or blank! Does anything seem wrong here? Also thanks to PA Bear. --In "Internet options" - "advanced" , I do not have anything showing so I cannont get to "browsing" etc. Iam not familiar with the "clean boot troubleshooting so I will take advice.
