I cannot install this update on my W98se. Installation fails every time. Now
no other updates will install. Do I need to re install windows 98se? If so can I do this without losing all my other programmes and data on my PC? |

Your subject's too long and the KB number was truncated. Are you referring
to KB837009, John? Assuming so: Clear History, delete Cookies and delete TIF via IE: Tools > Options > General, then... 1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your Desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe Mode > Enter.) 3. In Safe Mode, rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive) 4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press ENTER 5. Close the command window. 6. Reboot into Windows, check in at Windows Update and see if the problem persists. -- OE6-specific newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...tlooke xpress OE General newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...xpress.general ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) Inside Outlook Express http://www.insideoe.com John Tollick wrote: > I cannot install this update on my W98se. Thanks PA but I hit some problems
Point 4 wouldn't complete It said that KB837009.exe didn't exist or had some components missing . I included your swithces ( > 4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press > ENTER) but it still wouldn't play . If I just double click KB837009.exe it says that this update needs SP1 uinstalled. I have previously sought this update only to be told that I had all the components already installed. A little while ago someone told me (on here but cant find it again) to delete some files in a system folder somewhere to correct this. I did this but didn';t have your advice then so still remained stuck. Now I am hoping that your strategy might work if I delete the previous record. (I thought your advice re TIF etc might do the trick but sadly not.) "PA Bear" wrote: > Your subject's too long and the KB number was truncated. Are you referring > to KB837009, John? > [installed] That's why I didn't say double-click on it. <wink> (Actually that message is stating that you have a later update installed that replaced 837009, which in fact is probably true.) Let's back up a tad: 1. OE Help > About > Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL are displayed here? 2. Is Windows installed on your C: drive? (If you have the folder C:\Windows, it is.) 3. Is MSIMN.EXE located in C:\Programs\Outlook Express? 4. Is 'Outlook Express - KB823353' (or similar) found in Add/Remove Programs? The fact that you're having problems getting 896688 installed (as posted in another thread here) may indicate greater problems. To assure a clean install of anything, including Windows Updates, your anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes closed before beginning the install. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) John Tollick wrote: > Thanks PA but I hit some problems > Point 4 wouldn't complete It said that KB837009.exe didn't exist or had > some > components missing . That tells me you have 8232353 installed, despite its absence from
Add/Remove Programs. NB: If you find 'Outlook Express (Q823353)' or any other reference to 823353 in Add/Remove Programs, close OE and uninstall it, then post back. If not, you may have gotten a bad or incomplete download from... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en (a slightly different URL than I posted previous; corrected in quote below) or http://snipurl.com/kiro Delete what you've got now and get a fresh copy using one of the above links then try repeating the steps I posted earlier. BTW, rebooting into Safe Mode is not needed: Try it in normal (Windows) mode, logged on as Administrator if need be. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org John Tollick wrote: > and windows is in the root drive -- c:\windows > > "John Tollick" wrote: > > > Thanks for persevering with me. > > > > I have :- > > > > msoe.dll 6.00.2800.1437 > > inetcom.dll 6.00.2800.1441 > > > > No ref to KB823353 in "Add/Remove programs" > > > > "PA Bear" wrote: > > > > > > If I just double click KB837009.exe it says that this update needs > > > > SP1 [installed] > > > > > > That's why I didn't say double-click on it. <wink> (Actually that > > > message is stating that you have a later update installed that > > > replaced 837009, which in fact is probably true.) > > > > > > Let's back up a tad: > > > > > > 1. Sorry still cant get sorted.
On trying to download 823353 as suggested it says I need IE 5.5 SP2 to be installed. I have OE 6 on board so looked at SP1 for that ... but the ioriginal said something about being compiled for the wrong processor and subsequent updates said I needed OE6 SP1 installed!! Just checked my IE it is :- Version 6.0.2800.1106 Update versions SP1; q313829; q867282; q891781; 890923; q883939; q903235; q896727; so presumably Windows update thinks I dont have SP1 and my IE thinks I do! And I haven't a clue! (Coronation Street has nothing on this!) "PA Bear" wrote: > That tells me you have 8232353 installed, despite its absence from > Add/Remove Programs. Try downloading using the page reached using this link:
http://snipurl.com/kiro (The fact that you're apparently in the UK and I'm on the other side of the pond may be affecting the pages you reach when clicking on the MS URLs I post. Plus there's something funky about the way my MS links are showing up here: I test them before I post them and they work; If I click on 'em as posted in the newsgroup, they take me to a "The download you requested is unavailable." error page.) The download page *must* contain the following content or it's not the right page: <QP> This update applies to Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the following operating systems: Windows XP SP1 Windows XP Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) Windows 2000 SP2 Windows 2000 SP3 Windows 2000 SP4 Windows 98 SE Windows 98 Windows NT® 4.0 SP6A </QP> -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org John Tollick wrote: > Sorry still cant get sorted. > On trying to download 823353 as suggested it says I need IE 5.5 SP2 to be > installed. > On trying to download 823353 as suggested...
The links I'm posting are for downloading 837009 for OE6 SP1, not 823353 (which is already installed on your machine, from what you've posted here). > Just checked my IE it is :- > Version 6.0.2800.1106 > Update versions SP1; q313829; q867282; q891781; 890923; q883939; q903235; > q896727; Something's fishy: The latest IE Cumulative Update you have installed is 806727 (Aug-05). Does Windows Update not offer you 896688 (Nov-05), John?? -- ~PA Bear |
