Having problems getting windows update to work
When i try to update windows it goes to check then comes to choose "express" or "custom" it doesn't matter which one i choose it comes back and says "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue: Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended) Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem" When i choose click register or reinstall the files for me now it says down loading ... 100% then registering .... 100 % but then returns back to the screen above. it doesn't matter whether i choose "express or custom" I have checked all the settings, i have also checked that my original XP Home has been activated. (it says that it has). It came on the Acer laptop, only 2 months old. Any help would be appreciated.. |

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem. 1. Click Start. 2. Choose Run. 3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL Press okay If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files: 1. Click Start. 2. Choose Run. 3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :- net stop wuauserv Repeat for the following: regsvr32 wuapi.dll regsvr32 wups.dll regsvr32 wuaueng.dll regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll regsvr32 wucltui.dll regsvr32 wuweb.dll regsvr32 MSXML3.dll regsvr32 qmgr.dll regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll net start wuauserv -- =========================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2006 =========================== "W A N H" <WANH@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4AE6AF19-B1A5-4735-B19D-9DA75F0137ED@microsoft.com... > Having problems getting windows update to work > > When i try to update windows it goes to check then comes to choose "express" > or "custom" > it doesn't matter which one i choose it comes back and says > > > "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed > on your computer. I found this works well with fixing the update problem, but it also fixes
problems associated with other programs, such as MSN Messenger not connecting and giving no information on how to correct the problem. After following the steps listed in this posting, I was able to update windows and also to connect to the messenger service. |

I think he was commenting on TaurArian's answer which is in another thread so it couldn't be included in here anyway. http://www.microsoft.com/communities...7c9&sloc=en-us --- > -- > ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) > MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) > > Lord Odious wrote: >> I found this works well with fixing the update problem, but it also fixes >> problems associated with other programs, such as MSN Messenger not >> connecting and giving no information on how to correct the problem.
