How did you replace the regsvr32.dll file? I recently upgraded to XP from ME.
I am getting the same 0x80070002 error. I tried that link and deleted the
datastore, still won't work. I searched for regsvr32.dll and it's nowhere to
be found.

You both seem to be propagating a typo from somewhere.
There is a command program called regsvr32.exe on most versions of Windows.
AFAIK there is no module called regsvr32.dll on any.
(At least the DLL Help Database doesn't report one.)

Robert,
When I go to the command prompt and type "regsvr32.exe" it says it is not
recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch
file. Is this normal? I still can't run update and now I have uninstalled my
Norton software. Nothing is working.

Hi,

This sounds like a path issue.

I suggest you download and run Fixpath.exe, it repairs most
issues with the path.

Fixpath.exe is in fixpath2.zip available here:
http://internet.cybermesa.com/~bstewart/misctools.html

To see Fixpath's output, run it from a command prompt...

You should reboot after running Fixpath.exe.

Thanks for your response. I downloaded the progran, unzipped it and clicked
on the exe file. In a black command window it said "check for errors and fix
now?" I said yes and hit enter. It didn't do anything that I saw. I went to
start/run and tried to run it from there and it said it wasn't found. Am I
doing this wrong?

Hi,

Have you rebooted the computer after running Fixpath.exe?

That depends on how XP was installed.
E.g. it is very normal in an office setting.
Administrators don't want end users changing their registry.
It might be done by permissions or the program might
even be removed from the machine entirely.

Is this your own machine and are you the administrator of it?

Did you do the original install of the OS or did someone else?
Could you ask that person about your account?

Is your account in the Administrators group?
E.g. perhaps you need to logoff the account you are using now
and login to the Administrator account in order to use admin tools
to make changes.

Hint: try pressing Win-F1 and searching for "administrators group"
There is an article called Using Computer Management which may
help give you some necessary background information.

E.g. I just did that and used the link to open the Computer Management console.
Then I opened up Groups under Local Users and Groups and doubleclicked
on Administrators to find out which accounts on this machine are authorized
to use such tools and make such changes.

This is my home PC and there is only one profile on it. I recently upgraded
from ME to XP. I used to be able to do updates fine. Now, not at all. I have
tried everything I have found on this site, had a Microsoft tech guy
controling my computor for 3 hrs, been on the phone with them for another 3
hrs and still it doesn't work.

When ever I type "regsvr32" with any file extention after it I get a message
that says "windows can nit find regsvr32". I am at a loss and getting very
dissappointed with all this!!!!!

I was just able to download update KB899589 from the update catalog. I still
can't use the link in the tools menu.
