Hi everyone,
I see that many people have trouble with that KB837009 update that keeps popping back even after being installed. I read many posts but couldn't find the answer to my problem. I'm on windows 98SE In fact I uninstalled Outlook Express after a few attempts to install that update (and still having windows update saying I needed it despite a succesful installation) thinking it would solve the problem but it keeps popping again anyway. I checked and don't find the two other updates (KB897715 and KB823353) that might be a problem in my install/uninstall program. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance |

I too am trying to find a resolution to the KB823353 groundhog day problem.
Windows update tells me it's installed successfully when it really isn't. I have: Windows 2000 SP4 Ooutlook Express 6 Internet Explorer 6 SP1 inetcom.dll is: 6.00.2800.1506 msoe.dll is: 6.00.2800.1506 I've tried un-installing KB897714 first, but KB823353 still won't install; I downloaded it on the desktop this morning, but now when I try to install it I get the message: *This update requires Outlook Express 6.0 Service Pack 1 to be installed.* Any new suggestions for curing this problem would surely be appreciated. |

Correction: I meant to say I tried uninstalling KB897715 first, not KB897714.
Sorry bout that... |

You missed one. 887797 does the same thing (supersedes two of the modules which 837009 wants to update.) Both 887797 and 897715 are unfortunately referred to as cumulative updates when in fact they are only partial updates. 887797 at least refers vaguely to 823353 as its pre-req. Unfortunately even though 823353 is a cumulative update it appears that WU will insist that 837009 be installed because 823353 is not deemed a "critical" security update (the only ones which are still offered automatically to Win9x users.) For a reason yet to be determined, Windows Update was offering OE updates in
the wrong order to Win2k SP4 and WinXP SP1 users. They straightened it out c. 14 Aug-05. Here's the fix: 1. Uninstall 'Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB897715' via Add/Remove Programs and reboot. 2a. Assuming MSOE.DLL is now v6.00.2800.1409 or earlier (i.e., v6.00.2800.1123 or v6.00.2800.1106), install (KB)823353 manually using the file downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en [2b. Optional: Reboot and install KB887797 via http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-a1a3da675baf ] 3. Reboot and (re)install (KB)897715 manually using the file downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-28502b3d2518 Alternatively, after #1 above, check in at Windows Update and install whatever OE Cumulative Update is now offered and reboot. Then return to Windows Update to see if another one's now offered you. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) xephyr wrote: > I too am trying to find a resolution to the KB823353 groundhog day > problem. > Windows update tells me it's installed successfully when it really isn't. > I > have: > > Windows 2000 SP4 > Ooutlook Express 6 > Internet Explorer 6 SP1 > inetcom.dll is: 6.00.2800.1506 > msoe.dll is: 6.00.2800.1506 > > I've tried un-installing KB897714 first, but KB823353 still won't install; > I > downloaded it on the desktop this morning, but now when I try to install > it > I get the message: *This update requires Outlook Express 6.0 Service Pack > 1 > to be installed.* Any new suggestions for curing this problem would surely > be appreciated. |

Thanks PA Bear, my situation is now resolved! I uninstalled 897715 and
887797, rebooted, then installed 823353, 88797, and 897715 manually, rebooting between installs. Also I made sure all my virus and spyware protection was shut off during the process. Everythink is ok now, and windows update tells me I don't need anything else... for a change. Thanks again! - x "PA Bear" wrote: > For a reason yet to be determined, Windows Update was offering OE updates in > the wrong order to Win2k SP4 and WinXP SP1 users. Thanks for your answer!
I don't seem to have that extra one installed either. It starting to look strange to me ;-) "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote: > "Lysangelle" <Lysangelle@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:961B3FAA-8955-4189-A8B1-EBE2AD49B8A4@microsoft.com > .... > > I checked and don't find the two other updates (KB897715 and KB823353) that > > might be a problem in my install/uninstall program. > > > You missed one. 887797 does the same thing (supersedes two of > the modules which 837009 wants to update.)
