I had this same problem and Microsoft sent me this e-mail on how to fix the
problem. It worked great! The only thing that I had to do different from what she had said was I couldn't find the "netfx.msi" file and just ended up clicking on the .NET Versin 2.0 application file to install .NET 2.0. Once you do all of this and then reboot the Microsoft update shield disapperead. That should take care of all of your update problems associated with KB886903. Best of luck! Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Cary and I am glad to work with you. From the case log, I understand that Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) failed to install and we couldn't remove it. Please be assured that I will try my best to help you. However, if I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to correct me. This error code can be caused by damaged temp files. Resolution =========== First, let's use any of following methods to remove the previous version of ..NET Framework: Method 1: Remove it from Add/Remove Programs: 1. Open "Control Panel" and start "Add/Remove Programs". 2. Remove all versions of .NET Framework from the programs list. Method 2: Use the .NET Framework Cleanup utility 1. Please download the Cleanup tool from the link below and unzip it to the desktop and you will get a file Cleanup_tool.exe http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip The third-party products discussed above are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products. 2. Please close all the open windows. Double click Cleanup_tool.exe to run it, and then click "OK" -> click "Yes" -> Click "Cleanup Now" to remove it completely. Method 3: If both of the methods above cannot remove .NET Framework, please refer to the following article: PRB: Installation of .NET Framework Fails and Requires Manual Removal http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320112 If you have any questions about the steps listed in the article, please let me know. After removing previous .NET Framework installation, please download the newest .NET Framework 2.0 and extract the executive file to install it. Here are the detailed steps: 1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86) from the following link and save it to the C drive (C:\) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...acb-4362-4b0d- 8edd-aab15c5e04f5&DisplayLang=en 2. Click "Start"->"Run", type "C:\dotnetfx.exe /t:c:\Framework /C" (without quotation marks and there is a space before "/C") in the open box and click "OK". Note1: If you are using Windows XP SP2, there may be a Security Warning box to prompt you for clicking "Run" to execute the command. Please click it. Note2: If you are prompted to create this folder, please click Yes to continue. 3. Locate the folder "C:\Framework" and double click the "netfx.msi" file to install .NET Framework components. Hope this helps all affected by this problem! |
