I had exactly the same problem and I fixed it this way:
1.-Click the start icon on Windows XP 2.-Open the control panel. 3.-Click the listen, sound and voice section. 4.-Click the listen and sound devices. 5.- Click the hardware. 6.- Click the C-Media AC97 audio device. There you can read that this device doesn't work properly and need reinstallation. You click the reinstall option. Finish.
