Default Critical Upd. DirectX 9, W2000, KB904706, Error: 0x800706BE

Hello,
I have had an error with K904706 since it came out in Oct. Had 10 or so
updates that were wanted to do, and from Win Upd web, let them all installl.

All downloaded fine, by during install. when 904706 (DirectX 9. Win 2000
mine says), it quickly advances 50% and stops. Since then, have managed to
remove the download for this (no uninstall appears), and let it attempt all
by itself. Same result.

Error Code is 0x800706BE, and cursory look at logs, it appears that the cat
file (KB904706.cat) is empty (size 0). I can attach (paste?) KB904706.log,
if needed?

I have Win 2000, sp4. IE6. One home computer, Micro Laptop.
I have DirectX Version (DXdiag.exe): "DirextX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904).

No problems that I know of other than this won't install.
I've tried various things, unhecking in Dxdiag.exe, WHQL digital
signatures" checkbox. Always the same failure. (my guess: size zero for the
cat means nothing to do, eh? It says that in the log).

I decided to "paste" the entire log file below (forgive me). I had thought
problem was some conflict from installing many updates at same time. However,
by itself yields same failure.

Effect is KB904706 (Critical Security Update, DirectX 9, Win 2000) is
alwayhs wantein to install (or has last two months or so.

Hope someone can advise,,,

Have you seen this article

<title>Your computer may not be updated when you install one of the DirectX
security updates that is associated with security bulletin MS05-050
on a computer running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000</title>

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;909596

(MSKB search for
K904706
)

or more particularly done the diagnosis it suggests?
What are the results?

Notice that your log does not include the most important detail
or at least is very vague about the current version of quartz.dll

> 0.321: FileVersion of C:\WINNT\system32\quartz.dll is Greater or Equal To 6.5.1.900

The article ends with a link to the relevant TechNet Security Bulletin.
There you can find instructions for doing a command line invocation
which apparently allows you to specify a /verbose option.
That might allow you to get more insight on those "FileInUse" messages.
BTW I would make sure that all other programs are closed before
trying an install, in particular Windows Media Player which I think is the
only one which should be using quartz.dll.

If you have stopped Media Player and still get that particular symptom
in your log with no apparent explanation I would try using tasklist
(or Process Explorer from SysInternals) to try to understand why it
would be showing as in use (assuming the message means what it implies.)
Other tools from SysInternals could be really helpful here too.
E.g. both FileMon and RegMon could add insight.
Tip: when FileMon includes writes to the install log you can use
the length of the writes to infer which messages are being written
and thus correlate other file and registry accesses to supplement
what the log is showing. The correlation with a RegMon trace is
helped also by using the options Clock Time and Show Milleseconds
on both tools.

Hey Bob,
Que Pasta? (a correct might be "linquinie")...
Thanks for your detailed reply. I will have to check it out in closer detail.

I am certain nothing else is running (good to know that Media Player is #1
suspect for "quartz.dll". Indeed, old version is in WINDIR & DllCache
(v6.5.1.902), and a newer, larger version is unpacked and wanting to go in
the download folders for this update (v6.5.1.907). Indicating (to me) it
gives before ever trying, i.e. the KB907406.cat is empty (size 0).

I'm hoping that doc you referenced will help, as I've never had any type of
problem on this machine (why I let that 10 updates go at once, trusting past
experience). I wonder what's "different" about this update...?

I've tried really paring down services (turned off sounds, turned off "use
prefered sound drivers exclusively", etc.

Could something be wrong with DirectX itself? (dxdiag.exe). How does this
get updated, or is this update "updating" it...

As I said, I will examine your suggestions closely. One is to do this update
by hand?

Again, thanks, stay tuned!
Michael

Default Re: Critical Upd. DirectX 9, W2000, KB904706, Error: 0x800706BE

(my 2nd reply!)

From that Doc you referenced, "Your computer may not...
DirectX...MS05-050...", and that table it gives a page down: I do fall into
that first category.

The line following the table: "After you identify the name of the yadda..."
go to the MS05-050 asp web catelog area and find it. I'm sure what that is
saying exactly.

I went there, and found a command line version of the update in question
(KB907406, Dx9, W2K). This file named: Windows2000-KB904706-DX9-x86-ENU.exe,
by the way.

My confusion is the "fourth" column in that doc above "Name of the correct
update that must be installed" is the column title. and I read "Microsoft
DirectX 9.0, 9.0a, 9.0b, 9.0c when they are installed on Windows 2000 Service
Pack 4".

The latter I already have (I believe), 9.0c. Or is it saying a new (re)
install of the appropriate DX 9's ? Ugh.

I'll keep that command line update for now.
This is all kind of weird when there isn't really any problem (that I know
of)!

The tools you mention, not sure about those. FileMon, "Process Explorer from
SysInternals". (Remember Win 2000...)

Thanks again
Michael

Default RE: Critical Upd. DirectX 9, W2000, KB904706, Error: 0x800706BE

Hi, did you solve the problem ? I seem to have the same issue.
I checked out dxdiag and found that I have directx 9.0 and quartz.dll
6.5.1.902 which should be 6.5.1.907

When I downloaded the W2000 SP4 directx 9.0a,b,c fix it ran into the same
problem as the auto update did. System hangs half way through the install.
Task manager shows cpu is busy and the only way out is to re boot.

I would appreciate any solution.

Did you try getting the other diagnostics I suggested?
E.g. a verbose log, or some kind of explanation for all those
FileInUse messages?

Apparently tasklist is not easily available for your OS
and I don't know if the syntax of its tlist command has been updated
to give you the equivalent information to know which tasks have
a module loaded. Therefore, I suggest you may need to use
Process Explorer (freeware from SysInternals) to figure that out.

Tracing with FileMon and RegMon would be my preference
but just finding out what is going on would be a start.

BTW just in case you do have tasklist and for the benefit of any
XP lurkers here is what you should see when WMP is not running:

<example>
C:\>tasklist /fi "Modules eq quartz.dll"
INFO: No tasks running with the specified criteria.
</example>
