I am trying to install Windows update KB898461 using the online tool (and I
have tried the manual install) on my pc running windows xp with sp2 installed. When attempting to install from the online site there is simply a message saying that it failed to install. When trying to manually install I am told that "An error occurred while copying file spmsg.dll. Cannot copy file to destination directory" when i tell the installer to simply carry on regardless I am then faced with the error "Setup can not copy the file spmsg.dll." which is likely a problem caused by the initial non copying of the file. After searching the %rootdirectory%\WindowsUpdate.log for KB898461 I found that on a few attempts to install the update the error "0x8007f0da" I have tried numerous ways to fix this including changing the name of %rootdirectory%\system32\spupdsvc.exe to spupdsvc.old and methods 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 8 on this page "http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798" and I tired installing update "KB898543" (which was recomended on the comunity forum) with no effect. Given how crucial this update is to my continuing ability to download and install windows updates I would like to resolve this, I have searched this board and tried many solutions (as above) but am still unable to install this update. Can anyone help? |

E.g. in case you aren't aware of the file names of all the possible diagnostics which could be created, search your harddrive for all files which contain the string 800F0102 which were changed on the day that you ran the update. Usually it is best to do this as soon as possible after you try the update to avoid the possibility of subsequent updates being done which change the last changed date. HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Graza,
I have been getting error 800F0102 when performing Windows Update. I recently replaced Windows ME with XP Home Edition. I had to UnInstall XP to go back to ME and then Reinstall XP. After that, I was able to install 2 updates with Windows Update but then Windows Update began trying to install Windows Installer 3.1. It would download but never did successfully install after several attempts. Each time the error code was 800F0102. My version of Windows Installer was 3.0.3790.2180. After reading this Newsgroup I did the following: 1. Deleted all temporary internet files. 2. Reboot. 3. Installed Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2) from the Microsoft Download site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 4. Reboot 5. I then was able to use Windows Update to install 34 new updates. This seems to have fixed my problem. Hope it will help you solve yours. Correction: Step 1 should read: Ran "Disk Cleanup" on the c: drive and
deleted Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, and Temporary PC Health Files.
