I've just upgraded from win2k to XP and am trying to apply all the updates,
but KB835732 keeps failing with error 0x5, access denied. Reading through the log KB83532.log the registry updates DoInstallation oRegistryUpdates arecausing the problem. The log lists the old and new registry enties which include these: ---- New Information In The Registry ------ *** Source:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\RLeF5A.tmp Version: 7.0.6.17 *** Destination:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\RLevel.dll Version: 7.0.0.0 *** Source:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\WraF5A.tmp Version: 7.0.6.17 *** Destination:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\WrapUM.dll Version: 7.0.0.0 *** Source:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\SymF5A.tmp Version: 7.0.6.16 *** Destination:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\SymUrl.dll Version: 7.0.0.0 *** The problem with these is that they don't exist in the registry because I uninstalled Norton several years ago. Why does KB835732 think that Norton still exists and needs to be updated? I've scanned the registry for the path C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security and it doesn't exist anywhere. I've also scanned all the files on the c: drive for this path and removed them all, but Norton still shows up in the log. Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be most helpful. Thanks, Alan |

Somehow I got around this error I think by finally removing all references to
Norton and resetting all the permissions in the registry. And now I have a new problem error 0x8024D00C. I found another post about this stating to make sure the cryptographic service is started. Welll it is when Windows Update starts, but quickly goes to a stopping state and never gets to stopped. Only a cold reboot will get it back to running.
