Default RE: Windows XP update (KB910437) and IE Update (KB905915) install

After I installed these updates IE was unusable. I had to do a system
restore to get things working again. Here's what happened . . .

When I opened IE, it started to spawn multiple windows - at one time over
100!!! - and none of them worked, Obviously that locked everything up and
there were at lot of hard shutdowns. I was unable to connect to the internet
(dialup) to send the error messages during this ordeal.

These are the error messages (more or less):

Quote:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have
appropriate permissions to access this item.

Quote:
An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist.

Same thing whether I tried to open files locally, through local host (on
XAMPP) or on the internet.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Hm, have a look into the WindowsUpdate.log file to be found in the
Windows directory and post the last ~30 Lines. If you can find a
KB910437.log and/or KB905915.log file in the same directory, post
their contents here too.

You've SP2 for Windows XP installed, correct?

Bye,
Freudi

The Windows directory means Windows folder. Open Windows Explorer
and navigate to the "Windows" folder. There you'll find the LOG
file to look into.

Windows update fails on installing
KB910437.log KB905915.log

This bug seems to occur if you have changed the default location of the
"program files" folder.
Registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion
Key name: ProgramFilesDir

Just temporarily change the key data of ProgramFilesDir back to
"C:\Program Files" (on an us/english system), and install the update.

The LOG files aren't installed ;-)

That's not a bug but intended for KB905915 like it has been for
KB896688.

See the articles/thread I've linked too ;-)

I am experiencing the same problem. I checked my
registry for the above and ProgramFilesDir was set to: C:\Program Files

I am including the last few lines of each of the log files
if that will help anyone with this. I'd welcome any help!
