Default RE: installation KB905648: spamfilter in Outlook 2003 cannot be ap

Andrew,
If you inter KB905648 in the "Search For:" box above you will see that a lot
of us are having this problem. There are 7 threads and I've read them all
and no one has found the answer yet. I hope some MVP will weigh in and give
us some help. It seems like something Microsoft needs to address. They need
info so they can figure out what's going on. Here are my speck:

XP Home Version 5.01.2600 SP 2
BIOS: At/AT Compatible, 09/07/05
Memory: 1023.48MB
Hard Desk: C: 149.07GB
Office 2006
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ I use 2 monitors
Norton - tried it on and off
Windows Security - tried with firewall off and on

When I try to install KB905648 the cursor blinks 7 times and then freezes
the computer for about 10 minutes.

I also rebooted several times and they are very slow (15 minutes), and seem
to freeze often during the boot up.

Default RE: installation KB905648: spamfilter in Outlook 2003 cannot be ap

Here is the fix that worked for me. I ran detect and repair in outlook and
found
the Office Source Engine was disabled

To see If the Office Source Engine has been stopped or disabled and causing
your problem as was the case with me. Try the following

you may need your installation disk in the computer??

Log on with Administrative privileges.
Right click on "My Computer".
Select "Manager".
Click on "Services and Applications".
Select "Services".
Find "Office Source Engine" and enable the Service.
by right clicking select "properties".
if under the "Startup type" it reads "disabled" change it to "manual"
then click the "service status" start button.

then try and run the update again

This worked for me..

***___

Log on with Administrative privileges.
Run Setup (setup.exe) for Office.
Select Repair or Reinstall, and then click Next.
Select Reinstall, and then click Install.
Complete the installation for Office.

Lugnut,
I tried your fix it did not work for me. "Office Source Engine" was already
on "Manual". but I hit Start just to make sure. Still did not work. So I
thought I'd try to run detect and repair again. Now it won't run, after
about have way through I get a message saying it failed. I tried 3 times. I
tried with the CD in still it failed. Anybody have and ideas what to try
next?

Looks like Japers found a satisfactory solution with TaurArian's help?

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...2-b161523e7343

Also if you can read Spanish you might find Lieden's post useful

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...f02&sloc=en-us

(both from same search as yours)

BTW there is another newsgroup which specializes in Office update.
Perhaps a similar search there will result in more useful hits?

Good luck

Default RE: installation KB905648: spamfilter in Outlook 2003 cannot be ap

Steve / Lugnut / Robert,

Same here - the Office Source Engine is started yet the update still fails.

I've even followed the link under Robert's reply, which goes down the Repair
Office route, before applying the patch.

Interestingly, whichever way I now try to repair my Office installation it
fails (Control Panel, CD Setup.exe, Office application "Detect & Repair").

This PC build is less than a month old and it is my primary development PC.
It has XP Pro SP2, Office 2003 Ent SP2, Visual Studio 2003 & 2005, plus 3rd
Party components (Infragistics).

I'm running McAfee anti-virus, the MS Anti-Spyware application, and the
auto-updates are installed as frequently as they are available. This is the
first issue that I've had with Office 2003 and it really looks like I'm going
to have to re-install Office in order to get the poxy thing self-updating
again. I'm loathed to do this and I think I've wasted enough time on this
already.

Come on MS ... get this sorted!

:-(
