Running Windows XP Home edition, SP2. The Windows XP905915 (1.4 4.8 MB) says
it wants to install itself. (I am not using automatic install - but manual install). After downloading and installing, Update says that the fix is installed. Next time, or a few days later, it wants to install itself again. So it was never successfully installed? |

Is Automatic Updates disabled? How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306525 Have you rebooted since installing 905915? I am using 'automatic notify' when there are updates. Then I look at them and
install them (because I like to see what is going on). I have rebooted after the install - several times. One strange thing is, when installing, the 'progress bar' goes to about 25%, then suddenly jumps to 100% and says the install is complete. But next time I boot the computer, it notifies me that I need the same update - again ... The same thing happened when I used SP1 (I don't know if it was the same update no.). Do you have any other suggestions? Toktok,
I have a similar problem except that my nemisis is the "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" for WinME. I've done both manual and automatic install and I get nearly the same situation with the same end result. That is, it appears to install itself (or download and install itself, if via the web page.) Then, when I go to the internet (after rebooting; OR, on the next day, if I haven't rebooted) the "Windows Update" site or the "Windows Update" manager tells me that I need to install the same OE6 SP1 -- AGAIN! Also, I've been through a situation like this, at least once before (that I can recall), but can't quite remember what the solution to this is. It seems that, what I do remember (from Microsoft's recomendations) is something about deleting (or moving to somewhere safe) the folder(s) that deal with updates, such as the hidden "WindowsUpdate" folder in the "Program Files" folder and/or deleting (or (again) moving to somewhere safe) some "update" files in the "Windows" folder. Can't quite remember whether or not they had me scrub a couple of "data" entries in the "Registry" too. NOTE: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, DO NOT take the (sketchy, at best) scenarios that I've painted above as a solution and start deleting stuff (unless you are absolutely sure that you can do so without "hosing Windows or the Registry".) It is ONLY my intent here to indicate that: 1) I have a similar problem; 2) that I am still looking for (or trying to remember) the solution; and, 3) that when I find it (or remember it); I will both: A) apply it to my current situation and B) shoot the info by you for YOUR perusal. Until then, all the best to you in finding an answer. Cordially, Stormlance -- Mortl Seanc "Toktok" wrote: > I am using 'automatic notify' when there are updates. Best to begin a new thread about /your/ problem instead of piggybacking onto
an ongoing thread, no matter how related it may appear. Had you done so, I'd have replied with... Clear History, delete Cookies and delete TIF via IE: Tools > Options > General, then... 1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your Desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en [ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe Mode > Enter.) 3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive) 4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press ENTER 5. Close the command window. 6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the problem persists. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Stormlance wrote: > I have a similar problem except that my nemisis is the "Cumulative > Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" for > WinME. > > I've done both manual and automatic install and I get nearly the same > situation with the same end result. It looks as if this would solve the problem. I will try it and report
whether it works. Thank you! I tried some of the things mentioned in the link you gave.
Windows\update.log - strangely, here were only updates from 2004 ... But in another place you could see that the updates were 'successful' - about 10 times - the same update (KB905915) - which they obviously were not. Knowledgebase - the article is not available. Remove Discuss from IE (It was already unchecked). In the control panel - Remove programs list - the KB905915 was not visible. Then I tried to disable various pop up blockers, antivirus programs, etc. and hoped for succes. But alas, next time I logged on, it tried again to update KB905915 ... Perhaps I should try to remove some more programs...
