Hello to all,
I am having a problem with the shield that appears on the taskbar for auto updates. On 11/30/05 it appeared and tried to install an update I had previously installed. it cancelled itself at 33%. This was the first time that it had initialized the download & install without notifying me first, which is how I have it set. Now every time I go online it appears on the taskbar and hangs anywhere from 3-10% no matter how long I'm online. My question is can I go to the website and download & install these updates even though the shield is present? And is there anyway to fix this or is microsoft having a problem with there program? -- Thanks, PattiR Windows XP Sp2 IE 6.0 AOL 9.0 SE |

Yes, you can go to the Windows Update site and install them from there or use the Windows Catalog to download them, save them to the Hard Drive, and then install them at your convenience : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166 Two things to attempt to get Automatic Updates functioning again : 1) Empty Internet Explorer's cache. Delete the contents of the Temp folders. To remove all Tempory Internet Files/Temp folder contents in one felled swoop you can download and install CleanUp : http://www.stevengould.org/software/.../download.html > .. please take the time to read the "Introduction to CleanUp!" section > of the Help file. This describes in detail what files and settings are "cleaned" > when you run CleanUp!. Be sure that nothing here conflicts with your use of your computer. 2) Stop the Automatic Update service, then delete the contents of the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download and WINDOWS\Software Distribution\EventCache folders. You can stop the AU service from running from either the Services Console or by going to Start, Run, and typing : netstop wuaserv Click OK. Then delete the contents of the above folders. Afterwards, start the AU service from Start, Run, and typing : netstart wuaserv Click OK. Hi MowGreen,
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out. I feel better knowing I can download from the website even though the shield is hung on the taskbar. I already have a program called Window Washer that wipes my computer, sounds similar to the one you mentioned. Its quick and I use it every time I sign off the web. I will delete the files you mentioned and see if the next download runs smoothly. If the post is still here I'll enter a reply. -- Thanks, PattiR Windows XP Sp2 IE 6.0 AOL 9.0 SE "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: > > My question is can I go to the website and download & install these updates even > > though the shield is present?
