Thanks, Patti. We're closing in on the source of the problem. BITS is set to
manual, but when I tried running it, I get an error: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147942402. Looking at the events log, I also saw this message The server {4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. |

Yes, Harold, I believe that we're closing in on the source of the
problem....let's see if we can get it resolved! :-) Give this a try..... Go to Start>Run and key in: regsvr32 wintrust.dll Click on OK or hit ENTER Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box Go to Start>Run and key in: regsvr32 initpki.dll Click on OK or hit ENTER Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box Go to Start>Run and key in: regsvr32 softpub.dll Click on OK or hit ENTER Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box Go to Start>Run and key in: regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll Click on OK or hit ENTER Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box Go to Start>Run and key in: regsvr32 mssip32.dll Click on OK or hit ENTER Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box Restart the computer, then see if you can successfully start BITS. If so, then try Windows Update and see if you can now successfully download and install. Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "Harold Cataquet" wrote: > Thanks, Patti. I did a search on google to try and solve the problem, and I read the
suggestion to re-register the dlls. This failed... The concensus seems to be that the cause of the problem is an uninstallation of Norton Internet Security (and some other Symantec products). I fall into this category, and all the other suggestions mentioned also failed. The list includes: - Delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\NETWORK\Downloader - Start RPC Locator and then try BITS - Re-register the dlls None of these have worked for me. Symantec has no mention of this problem on their website. Any more ideas? |

A missing registry subkey, FilesNotToBackup, seems to be a common cause of
BITS-related errors in, primarily, Windows 2000 systems. Open the registry editor and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\BackupRestore Expand the BackupRestore key, and see if a subkey called FilesNotToBackup exists. If not, then create that subkey under BackupRestore (ensure the BackupRestore is highlighted as selected) by clicking on Edit>New>Key The new key will be displayed with "New Key #1" highlighted. Key in FilesNotToBackup so as to give the new key that name. Close the registry editor, then restart your computer. Now see if you can successfully download and install from Windows Update. Excellent!!! I'm sure that, since you were able to successfully starts BITS,
that the updates will now successfully install. But please, let me know whether you were successful at updating or not. You're welcome for all the help, Harold :-) Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "Harold Cataquet" wrote: > "Patti MacLeod" wrote: > > A missing registry subkey, FilesNotToBackup, seems to be a common cause of > > BITS-related errors in, primarily, Windows 2000 systems. > > Patti, you're a star! Patti. I have just followed this thread and I wonder if you could help me
with a similar problem? I am working on a friends computer which arrived before Christmas and will have to returned shortly! Although I have it functioning 99% correct, I am unable to install SP2 [WinXP by the way] as the problem is with Cryptographic Services - I just cannot get it started. I have tried the normal way, tried in MS-DOS, tried running the "fixdb" batch file, tried re-registering the ..dll files but all to no avail. The SP2 install error message is "Service Pack2 Setup Error. Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Crypt Svc's is running on this computer". In MS-DOS, the error message is "The service is starting, the service could not be started, a system error has occurred, system error 127 has occurred, the specified procedure could not be found". When trying to start the service (start\run\services.msc\start) the error message is "Error 127 The specified service could not be found". I have read a lot about this on various forums, and tried most suggestions but no luck yet. Your approach to Harold's problem makes me think you may be able to help me also ;-) Hope you had a Merry Christmas :-) -- "I am not afraid of dying - I just don''t want to be around when it happens" "Patti MacLeod" wrote: > Good to hear it, Harold! > > You're welcome, again!! :-) > > > > Regards, > > -- > Patti MacLeod > Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User > > > "Harold Cataquet" wrote: > > > Updates installed without a problem. > > > > Thanks again!! |

Hi biffo466,
Thank you, yes, I had a good Christmas. It's a busy time of year for me, though, so I haven't been at my computer since the 23rd. Did you check the System log in Event Viewer for any errors from source Service Control Manager that referenced the Cryptographic Service? If not, please check and if there is an entry there post the EventID number and the entire Description of the error in a reply. In the meantime, perhaps something here will help: http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "biffo466" <biffo466@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4B1BCFCB-526F-465A-9A11-B3592098522B@microsoft.com... > Patti.
