Default KB320549 : USBSCAN.SYS Issues with Multifunction Printers

Greetings,

I am running Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack 4 with all the
latest updates as detected by the automatic updates service as well as
manually visiting the Windows Update website. I am using an HP
Officejet 5610v All-in-One (multifunction) printer/scanner/fax.

My problem is that no software recognizes the scanner part of the
printer. HP and MS both have articles on the exact problem I am
having; The MS article is KB 320549. There is a problem with this,
however; The MS KB article says that the update is included with SP4,
which I have installed, but my printer still has the same problem, and
I do *not* see the hotfix listed anywhere in the SP4 (or the SP4
rollout 1, or the list of post-SP4 fixes) list of fixes included. The
only remaining option is to contact MS tech support, which requires
money--Which I do not have, being a student on a limited budget.

So my question is, how the heck can I get the update to fix my scanner
problem!? I have looked all over the MS web pages trying to find a
direct link to download the hotfix and install it manually, with no
success. I have reviewed the service pack files and fixes, and looked
everywhere I could think of. Please, if anyone can help, it would save
me! I purchased the printer/scanner/fax because I needed at least
printing and scanning for my schoolwork, and now I am stuck and unable
to complete two assignments due before the new year!

Thanks,
Cas

Cas,

According to this page :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327194

KB320549 is included in SP4. Check the version of Usbscan.sys
which should be v.5.0.2195.5847. If it's not that version then contact
MS, inform them of the issue, that you've already applied SP4, and that
the Usbscan.sys is not the correct version. There should be no charge
for the hotfix for this issue.
From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320549 :

If the correct version is installed, then something is amiss, and you'd
best contact HP.
