The green bar goes across.. and keeps going.. and going.. and going..
I have a 1200 kb/s adsl connection and a 3.06 ghz computer..

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for
the success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Also see:
This error may occur if the WUAUSERV and BITS services are not configured
properly in the registry (link may wrap to 2 lines)

For the registering files..
When I tried to stop the service, it wouldn't stop, the status would just go
to "stopping" so i tried doign it that way, didn't work. So I disabled it,
restarted the comp, then the service was stopped, so then i tried it, started
the service, didn't work, i also tried putting those things in the registry,
and succeeded but windows update still does not work.
Oh PS I have done adaware, spybot, and an up to date nod32 virus scan.

Try clearing IE's cache

1. Click Tools > Internet Options
2. In the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click "Delete Cookies"
3. Click "Delete Files" click "Delete all offline content" click OK
4. In the "History" section, click "Clear History".
5. Click "OK".

Also check if you have anything intercepting the WU process:-

For example, web enhancers or accelerators?, check your firewall and
antivirus settings.

I've disabled my anti-virus, turned off my firewall, even unhooked my router,
closed all other applications, cleared all the cash and history etc.
No web enhancers running.. No pop up blockers..
Still not working..

Thanks so much!
but.. problems still.

it said it needed to update certain components so that i can run windows
update
and i said ok, the update thing opened to download them
then it said it didn't install it:
Failed Updates
For help installing an update successfully, see the solution under each
problem description.

Problem: Please check your update history for a description.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Then, in the update history, next to that update, it doesn't say failed, it
said cancled. So it doesn't show me how to fix it.. please help.

Courtesy of Microsoft:

Install the WGA engine manually
==========================
The WGA engine may have been already installed but is not working properly.
We can use the following steps to reinstall it. This will ensure the engine
files be copied
and registered properly.

1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save it to
the
Desktop.
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eckControl.cab

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following three files:

GWFSPIDGen.dll
LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
quotations) and
press Enter. Copy the GWFSPIDGen.dll and LegitCheckControl.dll files into
the opened
system32 folder.

3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
(without the
quotations) and press Enter. We will see a popup message state this process
succeeded.

4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Copy
the LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

5. Right click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf folder,
and then
choose Install. The WGA engine will be installed automatically.

After we finish the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
validate the
Windows again.
