Don,

When or where are you getting the error message from ? Please check the
KB905915.log located in the WINDOWS directory and post back with it's
contents.

In the meantime, try downloading the update, saving it, disconnect from
the internet, temporarily disable the installed Antivirus program from
real time monitoring of the system, and then install the update -

For XP SP2 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

For XP SP1 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

REMEMBER to reenable the AV prior to connecting to the net.

I got the 0x80242008 error from the Windows Update History, then clicking on
the 'failed' status button. Below is the info copied from the status screen.

I will try re-installing without Norton and see if that works. Thanks!

Hi Don,
I had the same problem with windows update for just this one internet
explorer update, it failed everytime. After uninstalling everything I could
and disableing anything I couldn't uninstall I started to get a little upset.
I Decided to undo a chang in the registry that I had made a month ago. Its a
simple change of the default programs folder, I changed it from c: to f: so
any new programs would be installed on the f: drive by default. That fixed
it! Yea. Yu might want to check to see if yours has been changed.Open regedit
from the run box and drill down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion ,check the key
named "ProgramFilesDir" mine was set to f:\Program Files and I set it back to
c:\Program Files. Good luck.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the suggestion--unfortunately, but my program files directory is
still set at C:, so I'm not as lucky as you were! There has to be something
different about this update in that all the others installed without a hitch,
but this one's failed 11 times now. If you run across any other suggestions,
shoot them over, otherwise, I'm just gonna keep digging around until I get
this fixed. It's getting personal now! Have a great Christmas.

Mine was set to D: and setting it back to C: resolved the problem.

Don,

Is, or have you installed the beta of IE7 before ? This shows up
repeatedly in the log :

2.281: Unexpected Error While Executing Line 1 (
Test.IE7InstallBlock.Section ) of PreRequisite

If you have, check to see if this registy key is present. Go to Start,
Run, and type in regedit . Click OK :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{c90250f3-4d7d-4991-9b69-a5c5bc1c2ae6}

If it is, delete it. IE7 and IE6 can not run in a side by side scenario.

DO NOT delete or edit ANY other reg key or you can render the system
unusable !!!!

If not, here are some steps that were give to a poster by MS to resolve
the error code 0x80246008 :

" Step 1:

Install MSI 3.1 via the following link:

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en>

Please install Windows Installer 3.1, restart and try the updates again.
If possible, please disable all firewall or anti-virus applications first.

Step 2:

Go to Start -< Run, type in Services.msc and press Enter. Please check the
following services:

"Remote Procedure Call" (RPCSS) should be enabled, Automatic
"COM+ Event System" (EventSystem) should be enabled, Manual
"System Event Notification Service" (SENS) should be enabled, Automatic
"Volume Shadow Copy" (VSS) should be enabled, Manual
"Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" (SWPRV) should be enabled, manual.

Step 3:

Go to Start -> Run, type in regedit and press Enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\SvcHost

In the right pane, double-click to open the netsvcs key. Under Value
Data, add BITS to the list of services. Click OK. Exit the registry.
Restart the system and check out Windows update again. If still fails,
proceed to Step 4:

Step 4:

Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll. Click OK.
Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll.
Click OK.

Step 5:

Go to command prompt (Start -> Run -> type in CMD and click OK), run the
following command

Reg add
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\BITS\Parameters
/v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

(All one line. Since this command is complex, please copy it and right
click on the Command Prompt window -> Paste, then Enter.)

Then please restart the PC and retry Windows Update

If the above command does not work, please try the following again:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestor e\FilesNotToBackup

Restart the PC and retry Windows Update. If still no success, go to Step 6:

Step 6:

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

(Note: Application Data is a hidden folder, so ensure you go to My
Computer -> Tools -> Folder options -> View, check Show hidden
files/folders)

Delete the Downloader folder. "
