I had some driver corruption problems, so I had to reinstall my XP Pro. But
I haven't been able to update it. I tried to do the first batch of security updates. But "Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732)" won't install. It tries and then makes me reboot. I do. It shows up again and I install and boot and it shows up again. This is keeping me from doing the many other updates still needed to bring my system back up-to-date. Don,
Do you have Program Files on another drive or partition than the Windows directory ? Others have resolved the repeated requests to reinstall KB835732 by using Tweak UI, which is included with Power Toys for XP : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx to move Program Files, install the update, then move Program Files back again. The issue may stem from the location of the NetMeeting folder or the deletion of files from said folder. Don,
Then your issue is not the same. Open the KB835732.log in the WINDOWS directory and post it here. If you've installed SP2 then you do not need to install KB835732. Here's the link to the Security Bulletin : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-011.mspx You can also compare the files of the update with the files on your system. Not sure what SP you've installed, if any, but it covers pre-SP1 and with-SP1. >Then your issue is not the same. Let me respond to this with two posts. First, this is what I just sent to Microsoft: I tried for the third time to reinstall XP. This time so I can record every error in detail and include it here. But first some background: Chkdsk has been run several times. On the first it did fix one file. The disk had some bad spots. At least one in a system file. Using Spinrite all has been fixed or blocked off. I have run the XP defrag program a few times. It did as well as it could. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest. I ran the reinstall/repair. The first message is "Windows could not load the installer for tape controller. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance." Not a problem, as I am no longer using the tape drive. Then this error I get every time I've tried the reinstall/repair: COM+ Setup Error Sub-component COM+ raised an exception while processing the OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION setup message. d:\nt\com\comlx\src\conplussetup\comsetupc\setuput il.cpp (line 3406) Error Code=0x8007007f The specified procedure could not be found. Failed to load the library 'C:\windows\system32\catsrv.dll' After the reinstall/repair I checked the Device Manager. The only yellow exclamation points were on my NEC monitors. I ran the update drivers and the exclamation points went away. No other errors appear in the Device Manager. I then updated my NIC driver, my video driver, and my audio driver. Some other comments: My Program Files folder is on my C: drive. It does have a Net Meeting sub folder with all its files. On my G: drive I have a second Program Files folder with a single subfolder with a program that can restore deleted files, as for obvious reasons I downloaded this to another drive. I could rename or move this. In my Event Viewer/System I am getting two errors every minute or so: (1) Source: Rasman, Event 20035, Description: Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because it could not create buffers. Restart the computer. Access is denied. (2) Source: Service Control Manager, Event: 7023, Description: The Remote Access Connection Manager service terminated with the following error: Access is denied. In my Event Viewer/Application I find this error: Source: VSS, Event: 4101, Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Cannot obtain the collection 'Applications' from the COM+ catalog [0x80040154]. In my C:\windows\system32\ folder I find: catsrv(3).dll 225KB 8/4/2004 2:56 AM catsrv.dll 221KB 7/25/2005 11:39 PM I await your instructions before I proceed further. |

This is a symptom of a permissions problem but there are insufficient details here to know what the exact cause is. There is supposedly a verbose log option on the install which might elaborate on this but so far I have not been helped by that option. My technique to supplement these log messages is to use concurrent tracing by RegMon and FileMon. In this case you would suspect that RegMon would provide the ultimate detail but it might be very difficult to wade through just a raw RegMon trace even if you were able to guess at an appropriate set of filters. Therefore, I would run FileMon too, principally to associate timestamps with the above log records so you can then correlate the records in the RegMon trace. In order to do this you just need to have a filter for FileMon which captures writes to the install log and use options Clock Time and Show Milleseconds on both tools. Usually there is sufficient variation in the lengths of the log records that it isn't too difficult pattern matching on their lengths to find the correct set of records in the FileMon trace. BTW I use XP's Notepad's Status bar (which requires Word Wrap off) to show me the lengths of the log records. Note that the most you get in terms of a timestamp from the log itself is the second that the job started which isn't terribly helpful. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Don, Download the update from this page and install it manually by double clicking it. Then reboot the system if it installs successfully : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Suggest you install SP2 next instead of attempting to solve the KB835732 mystery as that update is included in SP2. You can either order the CD: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx or download the full SP from here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en MowGreen [MVP 2003-2006] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== Don Wiss wrote: > On Sat, 24 Dec 2005, "MowGreen [MVP]" <mowgreen@nowandzen.com> wrote: > > >>Then your issue is not the same.
