I noticed this week that windows update on my Windows XP SP2 machine had not
run since 9/11/2005. It was hung in the "starting" phase on services page of control panel. I researched the issue on line and saw post about reregistering the dll's associated with windows update. All reregistered with teh exception of wuaueng.dll which gave the load library specified module not found error. I tried the command line solution rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection AutoUpdate 132 %systemroot%\inf\au.inf and the one wqith the default install and nothing has changed. I also tried a solution where I deleted the wuaserv registry key, and now windows recognizes that Automtaci updates is turned off, but when I try to turn it on it throws an error and says to try on the automatic updates tab of the system panel which does not exist. I also downloaded and tried to run the stand alone windows update file WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe but when I try to run that I get an error that says sfc.dll could not be found. From command prompt I try to run sfc /scannow and I get Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable. ]. In response to another possible solution, I checked the version of mshtml.dll and it is 6.00.2900.2722 In safe mode I have run stinger, adaware, spybot and norton antivirus 2005 but still the problem exists. I have been thru tons of potential solutions, yet I currently do not see the wuwebcontrol in IE add-ons, I still can't register wuaueng.dll, I still can't turn on Automatic Updates thru Security Center. I am at wits end. Please help TIA mike |

Mike,
The system has a serious issue : http://groups.google.com/group/micro...90d94f964333c5 The resolution to the OP's thread was to reformat and do a clean install. Searching for other threads with the error message " 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable]" doesn't reveal a resolution, either. The only malware that might be causing the issue is a Root Kit or one with RK-like behavior. Suggest running these RK detectors to see if this might be the issue : Rootkit Revealer http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...tRevealer.html F-Secure Blacklight http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Last stop, the Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner : http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Next, check out the health of the Hard Drive by visiting the manufacturer's website and see if you can locate diagnostic tools. Then test the memory. If nothing is detected for malware or hardware related issues , try a Repair Install after first backing up all desired data : http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm MowGreen [MVP 2003-2006] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== mikeyk wrote: > I noticed this week that windows update on my Windows XP SP2 machine had not > run since 9/11/2005.
