I am the only user and adminstrator on this computer. Since May I have been
plagued with problems which all seem to relate to 'you don't have sufficient privileges ' or some variation of that. I cannot get Windows update to work and have read all knowledge base and other internet threads and tried many things an nothing resolves this. I have manually downloaded and installed each update individually. Same for Windows Installer! Cannot install any program that requires Windows Installer. I have a local area connection to my home network and cannot access properites to change any communications with same message. ( I just have a router and my notebook on the network) Same problem is present even is I go off network work and run this computer standalone. I have been through all my Admin Tools areas and set access to Administrator and Everyone. I have a notebook with XP Pro also, and have compared the settting in all tools area and they are identica, as far as I can determine. I created a slipstream CD and did a reinstall. No change!!!!!!!!!! After the reinstall the had twenty some updates and had to go though and install each one manually after downloading it via the KB article. Booting in Safe mode does not help. I am stumped. I have too many programs to do a reformat and reinstall so I am roughing it out fo now. Maybe when XP is replaced in 2006 that will correct the problem, although I am not sure. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED! |

Hi, Bob;
I realize you have already tried a lot of suggestions, but tossing out a few more just in case one might help. First, the info in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524 starting with Method #3 should be tried on that system. Additionally, check that your account is not part of the Guests group, and that the Guests group has only the default "Guest" entry. Also, boot into Safe Mode, delete the SoftwareDistribution folder in your Windows folder, and Rename the WindowsUpdate.LOG file to WindowsUpdateLOG.OLD to give that a clean start; then boot back into Normal mode and visit the V6 Microsoft Update site to allow a full check for current ActiveX controls to be made. Watch the screen carefully for errors, especially any about installing the MU/WU controls. Additionally check the new WindowsUpdate.LOG and look for error messages, reporting the 8-digit Hex ID for any errors back to this newsgroup. Beyond that I would look for 3rd party apps that are trying to protect you from yourself (<g>) by preventing changes to the Registry or to system files. Some 3rd party "Uninstaller" tools, some AV software or security suites, and some malware will have that potential. You can do a quick check for malware by visiting this site: http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm but should use at least one installed app such as Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) to check more thoroughly. You should then do a "clean boot" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353) and then attempt to install just one item from Windows Update. -- ....Sky Tom "Sky" King ============= Bob Zambenini wrote: > I am the only user and adminstrator on this computer.
