Default usb 2.0 ext drive xp pro formatted but asks for format

120 GB 2.0 drive is acom. formatted to fat 32. works perfectly on win98 se
with supplied disk drivers. When I now attempt to connect this drive with an
XP pro 2002 SP2 with all current updated and service packs as of 12-24-05.
drive can be seen in explorer. drive can be seen under drive mgmt. drive
letter is not taken by another drive. have tweeked it off and on again.
have even uninstalled and xp easily re-instally and correctly identifies
drive. there is just no way to access the information present on it at the
moment. I have re-connected to the old 98se system just to make sure i
didn't screw up the drive in the move.

I am now backing up the drive onto a spare drive on a win98se system just in
case while tinkering I happen to click that fast format button that keeps
popping up(scary) any help would be gladly accepted.

I am hoping to get a response as i don't wish to format to the new ntsb
format unless absolutely necessary. I just know i'm missing somethign
idioticaly simple. thanks again

Does it work on another Windows XP machine - or does it react the same on
any XP machine you connect it to?

Thanks, only have the one system at home (*more at work but not available
till after the 1st) but xp is still supposed to be compatable with the old
fat 32. even according to the mfg of the drive. I tried to connect the the
XP HD into the old win98 as a slave. was unsucessfull(more confusion).
New (for me) computer is a dell optiplex GX260. runs beautifully, just
can't figure this bugger out.

not that it makes a difference but it's a p4 1.8GHz 512 MB ram

BTW have an extra 40gb drive that would have taken the information in case I
had to re-format the external drive. wanted to have a good backup. don't
need a ghost just about 36GB to be backed up. hate to buy 50 cd's to back
this stuff up, though it night be a good time to clean house and be
selective.

link to the manual from acom data external drives.

thanks again for your help and helping an old hand to come into this century
from win98.

Windows XP can read/write FAT32 just fine. It will only natively format
32GB partitions with FAT32, however. This does not mean it will not read
larger ones, it just won't create them. In fact - I almost always recommend
people format their external drives using FAT32 because it is the most
widely accepted file system I know of - working in various versions of
Linux, Mac OS and Windows.

If I were you and only had about 40GB of data on it - I would copy the stuff
off and format it (FAT32 still) on the Windows XP machine using one of these
two utilities:
