Default Microsoft Update failures

I am on Win2k SP4. I have gotten repeated failures trying to use Microsoft
Update or Windows Update. The failing code is Error Code: 0x8007F0DA . The
last time I posted a message with this error, I received a reply saying that
the Cryptographic Service must be running but there is no Cryptographic
Service under Win2k.

What is thwe problem that Windows Update and/or Microsoft Update do not work
on my machine ? Is it really necessary for me to call Microsoft to complain
to them or is someone actually trying to fix these broken pieces of software
? I havbe a normal Win2k SP4 machine and can not update it properly. I have
repreatedly tried and repeatedly get the same error message with no further
explanation of why the update is failing. Even IBM's old PTF and APAR systems
were not as bad as this latest round of Micoroft/Windows Update. Isn't
anybody trying to fix this ?

This article (linked from KB822798 specifically for Windows 2000)
would suggest otherwise:

<title>KB281458 - Error message when you install a Windows 2000 service pack or product update</title>

unless perhaps the OS is just some kind of subset of Windows 2000
in the same manner that Windows XP Home edition is for its base OS?

Perhaps you would get better assistance from a newsgroup more familiar
with your OS?

Good luck

Thanks for the link. The article specifically states that the Cryptographic
Service does not show as a service under Windows 2000. If it does not show,
there is no way as a user I can change its properties.

Don't be snide.

Ditto above.

I appreciate very much the link anyway. Except for not being able to
manipulate the Cryptographic Service in Windows 2000, since it does not show
as a service, I will try the other possibilities to see if they fix the
problem.

I don't see anything there as explicit as that.
Care to quote something from it that makes you think that?

I will admit that I was probably misled by the text of the message
being quoted in the article. The copy I had didn't actually have the
extra coloring of the messages to emphasize that detail.

Not at all. That was as diplomatic a way that I could think of to express
that idea. I have never used that OS and what little familiarity I had with
its unique features has been lost since my transition from NT4 to XP.

Again, this is a sincere suggestion. I expect that there are more users
of your OS there who are familiar with problems of accessing WU
(and more importantly have access to a machine with it installed to test
their ideas with) than there are here.

From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/8227...23120121120120
I read:

"Method 2: Set Cryptographic Services to automatic
Set the Cryptographic Services to Automatic, and then try to install the
program again. To set the Cryptographic Services to Automatic, follow these
steps:
1. Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
2. Double-click Services.
3. Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
4. Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.
Note Windows 2000 does not list Cryptographic Services in the SERVICES
Administrative Utility."

Thanks. Not sure how I missed that. It looks ambiguous to me though.
Does it mean that W2K has a service which doesn't show
or does it mean that there is no such service (as you first asserted)?
E.g. otherwise why wouldn't they just more plainly state that the whole
of Method 2 didn't apply to that OS?

Does your OS have the tasklist and sc commands?
Perhaps the service could be shown and controlled that way?
E.g. in a cmd window enter:

tasklist /svc /fi "Services eq CryptSvc"

or

sc queryex CryptSvc

Note: if there is a service on your OS called Cryptographic Services
but it does not have this short alias neither of the above commands
would work either. In that case perhaps just tasklist /svc would give
a better clue.

Good luck

I first asserted it because I did not see it in the list of Services. I have
no idea if there is really such a service under Win2k, but I expect there may
be because a number of DLLs connected with it appear to exist.

I could find neither of these commands. When I look at Task Manager I see no
executable which starts with Crypt...

It's possible you would only have them if you had installed the
W2K RK or perhaps a subset of them which could be known
as Support Tools.

Otherwise unless the old NT tool tlist was enhanced in W2K
to include services information it looks like you're out of luck.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d.../tasklist.mspx

(MSN search for
tlist svc site:microsoft.com
- first of only 4 hits
)

<quote>
Tasklist is a replacement for the TList tool.

That's the problem. Services don't show up in Task Manager
except by their host executable name, e.g., svchost.exe
The reason I gave you the commands was to try to find out
if you had a host program which was running Cryptographic Services
perhaps under a different name.

The only other idea of for listing services then would be Process Explorer.

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html

Again, these are details which I expect helpers
in newsgroups which specialize in your OS would be
more familiar with.

I downloaded this and ran it but I see no cryptographic service under the
services in the tree view. U will just contact Microsoft on Monday. Thanks
for your help.
