I'm getting the 0x800A0046 error when I try to update Windows.
I was getting this error on Win2K Pro and still get it after updating to WinXP Pro with SP2. I've tried the fixes for user acct, security descriptor, & impersonate client as published from MS but none of these work. When searching for available updates on the Update site, you receive the

What causes Error 0x800a0046
http://www.updatexp.com/0x800a0046.html from the above page: -<snip> From a newsgroup posting: Another possible cause for the 0x800a0046 error is that the "Automatic Updates" service is not running as the correct user. To check/fix this, find "Automatic Updates" in the services list and choose "properties". Then select the "Log On" tab and make sure the button for "Local System Account" is selected. If it isn't, then close the window and restart the system. <snip> -- =========================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2006 =========================== "Flea" <rsflea@bellnorth.com> wrote in message news:gqp3r1ts22ecgo8080vvtd9pbb3id7796e@4ax.com... > Been there, done that more times than I care to count. > > Next Idea?? > > On Tue, 27 Dec 2005 18:57:22 -0500, "PA Bear" <PABearMVP@gmail.com> > wrote: > >>When searching for available updates on the Update site, you receive the >>0x800A0046 error. >>http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...cleid=20&ln=en > > > Flea AH#73 BS#54 SENS/KOTL NS#9 DEAC#9 > > I was not put on this earth to play nicey-nice > with numbnuts like you. -- R. Yep. Been there, done that too.
Already changed the "RCP" & "RCP Locator" to "local system account" too. And the only groups I am a member of are Administrator & Debugger User. How were we supposed to know this?

I stated so in my original post...
"I've tried the fixes for user acct, security descriptor, & impersonate client as published from MS but none of these work." As I also stated previously, this started on this machine when running Win2K pro SP4 and continued after upgrade to WinXP Pro SP2. I have also changed RCP & RCP locator to Local and the account I use on this machine is only a member of Administrator & Debugger User groups. So I still need a fix for this that works. My best guess is that one of the hot fixes from a previous update when this was Win2K Pro SP4 is what caused this problem, but I have no idea which one. I do still get the get the "Updates are ready to install" icon in the system tray, but when I click it, it just disappears for a minute or so then comes back. Someone out there has to know what caused this on Win2K SP4 and continues to cause it on upgrade. Perhaps if you'd included all of previous messages in your replies, that
would've been more evident. With all due respect, upgrading to fix an ongoing problem is seldom a good idea. I suggest "flattening" the box and reinstalling the Windows version of your choice. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Flea wrote: > I stated so in my original post... > "I've tried the fixes for user acct, security descriptor, & > impersonate client as published from MS but none of these work." > > As I also stated previously, this started on this machine when running > Win2K pro SP4 and continued after upgrade to WinXP Pro SP2.
