Default Unable to update XP-SP2 Home

I have been attempting to update XP home edition, but it keeps giving me an
error (
Error number: 0x8DDD0002) saying I need to be an admin??!!! I'm the only
one who uses this PC and I am not the admin, even though the User Accounts
control pannel applet says I am???!!!???

I need one of two solutions here:
1) A way to force the site to acknowlede that I AM AN ADMIN!
or
2) A way to promote myself to the admin level.

In case it helps (I doubt it), here's the windowsupdate.log file for my
recent "attempts":

I'm not going to be able to give you an answer likely but could you do me a
favor?

Start > run > type "services.msc" without the quotes > hit enter button

Is the COM+ Event System running? Are both the COM+ services set to manual
and not to disabled? On failure they're set to restart? Anything in the
event log? (eventvwr.msc)

I'm following up on a strange tangent I seem to actually have notes for from
almost 3 years ago. I was reading those just a few minutes ago actually and
then stumbled across this post. I wish I'd followed up on it then but at
that point it wasn't common, more pressing issues - Blaster was being a pig
still for instance and that's where my notes leave off on that section - but
if you don't mind answering those than I might have an answer for you if no
one else does.

I have the Component Services application running. The COM+ Event System
service was running, but not the COM+ System Application. I have started the
System Application and tried to get updates... same results. BTW, both COM+
services are manual startups.

I checked the event logs, but nothing out of the ordinary appears. At
least, no mention of any update failures. Anything specific I should look
for?

You receive an "Administrators only" error message when you try to visit the Windows Update Web site
or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524/
Error number: 0x8DDD0002
To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also
prevent you from completing this procedure.
You receive this message even though you are already logged on as an administrator or a member of
the Administrators group.

Error 0x8DDD0002 – incorrect permissions for the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder. Possible fix:
Reset the permission on the softwaredistribution folder

WinXP Pro :-
1. Open windows explorer, locate c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder.
2. Right-click on the folder, choose properties. Click on the security tab.
3. Make sure Administrators and System have full control.
4. Click on the advanced button and put a checkmark in "Replace permissions entries on..."
5. Click on the owner tab, select Administrators and check "Replace owner on subcontainers and
objects."
6. Now make sure "automatic updates" and "BITS" services are started. If they are not started, then
start them.
7. Try WU again.

WinXP Home you must boot into safe mode and login as administrator and then perform the above steps
1 – 7.

This error message may occur if you have insufficient permissions to the Windows Update registry
keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read errors 0x80070005 and 0x80080005.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=13&ln=en
When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you see the 0x800A01AD error while
looking for updates

keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read errors 0x80070005 and 0x80080005.
Applicable operating systems, Windows XP Windows Server 2003
Resolutions
1. Check permissions on the Windows Update registry key
Click Start.

Nope, that was perfect. Thank you much. I'd tend to suspect it's permissions
and that you'll want to follow TaurArian's second set of advice.

I logged in as admin in safe mode, but the settings for the folder didn't
stick. I did make sure that "BITS" and Automatic Updates were on and set
their starts to automatic. That didn't help, but, on a hunch I found what
may have been the problem.

My firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) had the progam permitted to act as a client,
but not a server. When I reset the permissions to act as server, then I
retried and got a different error. I ran regprocsvr32, something that
registered some .DLL files, and retried updates.

WE HAVE UPDATES!

$#@!!? *&^%<>? +-)*&!@#!@!!

Just when I thought I was able to get the updates, the most important one
fails to install! (KB898461) I have downloaded the install program, but when
I run it all I get is "Access Denied" and "Installation did not complete."
This time it's not the firewall causing the problem.

Now I'm questioning the true value of autoupdating. If I can't install this
one update, there's no point in using it anymore, and I might just change
microsoft's websites from trusted to blacklisted!

Oh, here's the log of the recent attempts to install:

[KB898461.log]

I see no sign of those symptoms in your log.

Comparing your log with mine I see an essential difference starts here:

E.g., between those two log entries is where I see the update copies
being done.

FWIW since you have downloaded the update and are trying to install it
manually I would also try its /verbose option.

Alternatively, since the file attributes of branches.inf has in the past
been found to cause problem symptoms such as yours you could
try checking that first.

If neither of those ideas seem to help I would try using my
RegMon and FileMon technique of supplementing the install log
trace.

Good luck

I'm still getting "Access is denied" on the manual updates, and the
autoupdates are still failling. I went into safemode as admin and was able
to change the SoftwareDistribution directory for full control. The registry
permissions, I'm not sure about.

I managed to get full control for the administrators for the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate
key, but for SYSTEM the boxes were all greyed out. The permissions for this
key were inherited from the parent MACHINE\SOFTWARE.

I found the branches.inf file for the new installer (KB898461):

[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
FileVersion=5.1.1.8

[FileBranchInfo]
RTMQFE="%RTMQFE_NAME%",SP1RTM
SP1RTM="%SP1RTM_NAME%",SP1QFE
SP1QFE="%SP1QFE_NAME%",SP2BTA
SP2BTA="%SP2BTA_NAME%",SP2RC1
SP2RC1="%SP2RC1_NAME%",SP2RC2
SP2RC2="%SP2RC2_NAME%",SP2IDX
SP2IDX="%SP2IDX_NAME%",SP2RTM
SP2RTM="%SP2RTM_NAME%",SP2GDR
SP2GDR="%SP2GDR_NAME%",SP2QFE
SP2QFE="%SP2QFE_NAME%",SP2QFE

[Strings]
BUILDTIMESTAMP = "20050517.114851"
RTMQFE_NAME = "RTMQFE"
SP1RTM_NAME = "SP1RTM"
SP1QFE_NAME = "SP1QFE"
SP2BTA_NAME = "SP2BETA"
SP2RC1_NAME = "SP2RC1"
SP2RC2_NAME = "SP2RC2"
SP2IDX_NAME = "SP2IDX"
SP2RTM_NAME = "SP2RTM"
SP2GDR_NAME = "SP2GDR"
SP2QFE_NAME = "SP2QFE"

Let me know if you find anything wrong, or have a way to force those
registry permissions.

That's what I thought you were doing before and why I suggested
you try the verbose option too. If you tried the verbose option
there should be some extra diagnostics, either in the same log file
or in an additional log file. Tip: since we aren't sure of the names
of all the possible diagnostic files use Search Companion (aka Win-F)
to search for all files which were changed on the day of the update
(e.g. within the last day), then sort that list by Date Modified, then you
can find files which were changed within the minutes that the update
was running.

....

....

It's the file attributes of the file which matter.
(I think that some users were finding that it was somehow marked Read-Only.)
Therefore one approach to listing them and changing them would
be to use the attrib command in a cmd window:

cd /d %SystemRoot%\Inf
attrib branches.inf

etc.
