Default Problems affecting Windows Update / Active X / Flash

Dear All,

Here's a weird one for you. I have a Dell GX150. P3 1GHZ with 512MB RAM
running XP SP2 and Internet Explorer v6.0.2900

The initial problem was that Internet explorer stopped playing flash movies
embedded in internet explorer pages. It was almost as if it didn't realise
that they were flash movies and instead it believed they were images. Either
way, nothing displays. all you get is a thumbnail similar to that of when an
image fails to display.

I've checked file associations and SWF are associated with Flash. I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling flash but this has made no difference.

I then thought that it would be a good idea to check for updates but windows
update doesn't work either as it seems to have screwed up active x. I get no
yellow bar stating that Active x is required !, it just launches the initial
windows update page and then says "done".

I've tried repairing internet explorer using some info found here :
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-03.html and here :
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;318378

Still no luck !

I then installed Mozilla Firefox just to satisfy my curiosity and that plays
flash with no problems so it's surely just an issue with internet explorer.

I guess I just need to get a fresh installation of IE but I can't download
it from MS website as Active X is screwed and I can't really wait to get it
on CD !

Is there an exe I can download from somewhere please ?

If anybody out there has similar issues then please get in touch so we can
bounce some ideas around.

I really don't want to have to rebuild this PC as the user has a whole heap
of bespoke apps installed which are a real pain to reinstall and configure.

Thanks

Steve

thanks

Hi Ernest,

Sadly not. I think I will have to rebuild the PC unless somebody has a
solution ?
