I am unable to install the new Windows Update installer - and hence any
Windows Update files. I am on Win2K SP4 and accessing the Internet via a WiFi card and router. I get the following message. There is no entry in Update History. Failed Updates For help installing an update successfully, see the solution under each problem description. Problem: Please check your update history for a description. Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) |

Finally sorted after trawling through Google. Despite all the many
solutions, this was the only one that worked for me: 1) Run DCOMCNFG 2) Click the "Default Security" tab 3) Click the "Edit Default..." button for "Default Access Permissions" 4) Add the local Administrators group (there was only one user listed before) 5) Click "Apply" Windows Update worked worked like a charm after that! Hey,
You and I had the exaxt same problem. I have just formatted my computer and installed Win2k SP4, and I am also connected to the internet with a wireless WiFi connection (could that have something to do with it?). Had the exact same problem trying to use Windows Update (or Microsoft Update I guess). I tried out your solution but unfortunately it did not work. (Although in my case there were actually NO users or groups in the area you specified.) I really had my hopes up. Glad it worked for you... I had a similar problem after I did a repair on W2000SP4 OS, but the steps
outlined in this thread fixed it up. Thank you. "Trev" wrote: > I am unable to install the new Windows Update installer - and hence any > Windows Update files.
