I just reformatted my system and installed a fresh copy of Win XP Pro - SP2.
This is the same disc I've used all the time with no troubles. The very
first thing I do is install my window's updates and then my anti-virus
software. When I go to Window's Update to begin my updates it starts to
install their tool, gets to 100% registered and gives me the following
error:
[Error number: 0x8007041D]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem.
I'm like, "Wow, that's odd.. ok, let's reinstall from scratch again." So I
do another full format and reinstall to find the same issue. So I go look
at services.msc and see that the automatic update service is set to
automatica but won't start. I click on start and get the following error:
Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 0x8024d007: 0x8024d007
Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on? I need to get my pc
updated.

To all it may concern,

First, let me wish everyone a prosperous new year! I am excited because I
spent half a day trying to resolve the same error and around 5 AM this
morning, I finally got it! I poured through dozens of threads I located in
Google (BTW, if you have been living on another planet and perhaps unaware,
Google rocks!)

I tried everything listed in Microsoft's KB articles pertaining to this
exact error and other KB articles that I was lead to by other various threads
with NO success.

I tried un-registering/registering the associated DLL files (wuapi.dll,
wuaueng.dll, atl.dll, wucltui.dll, wups.dll) and even downloading a copy of
regsvr32.exe from Microsoft. All of this was in vain, even though some claim
it resolved their issue.

One of the threads I read turned me onto looking into the services control
panel. I discovered that the AutomaticUpdate service was stopped (not
running). Even after insuring that all the dependant services were running
and rebooting, I still had no luck getting Windows or Microsoft update to
correctly register the update utility. Mind you, my problem occurred after
laying down a fresh copy of WinXP Pro SP2 on a newly purchased drive. I noted
that I received a different error when trying o start the service manually:
0x8024d007. I Googled this error and it led me to the following Microsoft KB
which ultimately resolved the Windows/Microsoft Update utility issue:

The KB article outlines how to manually reinstall the Windows update client.
Once I followed the steps, my problem was resolved. It's a shame that
Microsoft had a fix in their knowledgebase for the 0x8007041D error but not
in the specific article pertaining to such but such if life in the MS world,
eh?

I hope this helps everyone that is experiencing error 0x8007041D/0x8024d007.
If it only helps one other person though, it was worth my effort.

I can NOT download or install anything. Internet explorer will not let me. I
can't download windows updates, or microsoft updates. I am so upset.
Microsoft blames Sony and Sony blames Microsoft and Internet explorer. I
don't know what to do. Help
