I have the same problem as Jen - tried step 1 and it gave an Error 1053. This
is on a PC with 128 MB Ram, and is actually stuck at 14% for weeks now.

<example>
F:\>net helpmsg 1053

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
</example>

The real point of stopping the service is to make step 2 possible.
An alternative to stopping the service would be rebooting in safe mode
(assuming that this service would not be started in safe mode)
and then trying step 2

Good luck
