Default XP update / Outlook express / POP3 no response

After installing the latest XP updates KB890830, KB905915 & KB910437 Outlook
Express returned a general error stating, "POP3 server did not respond in 60
seconds do you wish to wait or stop." Outlook express again works correctly
if I restore the computer to a date before the XP updates were installed. I
also use Norton Internet Security software and wonder if the XP updates,
Outlook Express, and Norton have a problem running

1. Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:
