my desktop is in a public area. how do I password protect the system at the
desktop stage - allowing only the users having knowledge of the password to
access the system?

Press the Windows key+L to lock the system. Only persons with your password
or system administrators can unlock the system.

Control Panel->User Accounts

You do not state what version of XP you are using. If it is XP Pro then
whom ever setup the machine will have had to enter an Administrators
password, if it is XP Home then the Administrators account is only
accessable when in Safe Mode and does not have a password set ynless
somebody has set one (ie the default is a blank password).
