Default virus protection status unknown

os: windows xp profession ver.5.1 sp2
installed Symantec AntiVirus, program version: 9.0.0.338 scan engine:
51.2.0.12

in system tray i got a permanent warning as follows:
quote
Symantec AntiVirus reports that it is installed, but its status is unknown.
Click Recommendations for suggested actions yoiu can take....
unquote

please advise if this means that the installed antivirus program is not
working properly, and/or how i can turn off its unknown status to windowsxp
system.

thanks.

What is the message coming from? XP's security center? If yes, I believe
Symantec has updates at their website that lets their program communicate
its presence and status with the security center.

Also in Security Center (double click on its tray icon to open), you can
select "Change the way security center alerts me" and uncheck the box for
the antivirus alerts.
