I run chkdsk/r to clean up incidental damage, like
after a system crash. I'm accustomed to how long it takes, but today it took cloase to an hour to get through Step 4, Verification of file data. About twice the usual. Any clues a to where I can look for possible reasons for slowdown? -- William B. Lurie |

You should boot to xp cd,recovery, select 1 for entry, press enter key for
password, then type:CHKDSK C: /R You'll find its faster. "billurie@nospam.org" wrote: > I run chkdsk/r to clean up incidental damage, like > after a system crash. You are used to how long it take to complete when there is not any major

Did you run Disk CleanUp to remove Temporary Internet Files before
running chkdsk. That can help. -- Hope this helps. Sorry! But just where did you say that in your original post, which is what
I responded to? -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! <billurie@nospam.org> wrote in message news:%23XmzSECCGHA.984@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl... > Richard Urban wrote: >> You are used to how long it take to complete when there is not any major >> corruption. >> > Richard, I repeated twice, there were no repairs made, so > presumably there is no major corruption, not a bunch of anything running > at the same time, especially since it's running chkdsk during start-up. > > -- > William B. Andrew, could you expand that into more detailed
procedure? I normally go Start>>Run>>cmd, then cd\ ....... chkdsk/r ......and then Restart the system, so that it does chkdsk when presumably nothing is running, and again presumably, the fastest...... No need to give details, Andrew. I found it,
followed it. Does essentially same thing as "my way", but tells a bit less about what it's doing. Runs at same speed as "my way". Thanks.
