Yesterday I installed a DVD+R/W drive in my hp pavilion 552w on the second
IDE Port as Master, with my (I believe this is right) Mitsumi CD-RW as slave. My Hard Disk Drive (with HP Recovery Drive bundled inside) is on the primary IDE as Master. Unfortunately, after I hooked everything backed up and turned on the power, my computer started emitting a long, annoying beep at me and refusing to do anything but light up the main power light and turn on the fans. After much tinkering I finally got it to stop doing that, so that now the motherboard will load, showing me the Boot-time diagnostic screen as specified in BIOS. None of the drives are detected (all slaves and masters after a pause are determined to be none), and if I don't press F1 to enter Setup, my computer accesses my A: Drive trying to load a system disk (which I of course do not have). I've tried hooking all the different four-pronged power cords into each drive, even tried returning to the setup without the DVD+R/W, but nothing seems to work. I really could do with some assistance here, thanks. |

The beep you got when you started usually indicates the type of problem
you're having. Beep codes are BIOS dependent and, since you didn't mention the BIOS manufacturer, we can't answer unless someone knows if HP's all come with BIOSes from the same manufacturer. The owner's manual may list beep codes or you may have to go to the HP web site and ask. Adding the new device may have resulted in your exceeding the power output of your power supply. What is the PSU rating and how much power does everything in your system require? And, if it is the PSU, because you exceeded it's limits, removing other items does not necessarily mean it will now work - it may have suffered a major failure.
