Default XP Pro clean install

I'm trying to load xp pro when I get to the installing windows portion. I
get this error.
Installation failed\I:386\asms. Error message. The request could not be
performed because of an I/O device error.

Fatal Error:
one of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be
installed

the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

How do I find out which device is the problem to fix it?

Default RE: XP Pro clean install

You must have other hds installed when installing xp,or several partitions
still active on the drive. The reason,xp should install as C: not D: as you
list,
remove other hds and/or delete partitions on drive or set as raw space, you
can then reformat them in xp after its installed.
