There is the "quick launch toolbar" that displays at botttom next to "start".
rt click on task bar, then Toolbars, and select Quick Launch. The default icons should display. The "show Desktop" is one of the defaults. You say " I have icons on my own task bar for quick action but when I tried on a friends new PC to do the same...I got the no entry sign when I tried." Not sure what yuo mean by no entry?? Do you know if the other person is Admin or have Admin privileges?? What do you mean by no entry? -- Dennis S. I''m from Illinois. I hope I helped you. Good Luck. Right click, undo "lock the taskbar".

Thanks for your help
When I dragged the icon from the desktop onto the tool bar a sign appeared which was like a no entry sign on a road. I think that his system must have his tool bar locked and also Quick launch has not been selected as you suggested will try both the next time I visit him I still need to know how I got the icon for "show desktop" which minimises all widows that are open on the desktop Blair "Dixonian69" <Dixonian69@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:6245F0C8-483C-43C2-895F-9DA251EFCE37@microsoft.com... > There is the "quick launch toolbar" that displays at botttom next to "start". > rt click on task bar, then Toolbars, and select Quick Launch. Have you checked to make sure that the task bar isn't locked?

The Quick Launch Bar is a toolbar, and it is not the Task Bar, nor is it part of the Task Bar. You can put shortcut icons on the Quick Launch Bar, but not on the Task Bar. The Quick Launch Bar may look like it's the Task Bar because, by default, the Quick Launch Bar sits *on* the Task Bar, but it doesn't have to. In fact you can drag it off and put it, for example, by itself on the top or left of the screen. I particularly like it on the side, because it takes up little screen real estate there, and provides room for lots of shortcuts while still leaving room on the task bar for running programs. As far as how to add shortcuts to it, the easiest way is simply to drag them there. Make sure the Task Bar isn't locked. > I still need to know how I got the icon for "show desktop" which > minimises all widows that are open on the desktop Create a text file in Notepad as follows: [Shell] Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar] Command=ToggleDesktop Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch bar. Or just click on this link: Restore/Add Show Desktop to Quick Launch (Line 61) http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Also note that you can do this with a keyboard shortcut: the combination of the Windows key + D or the Windows key + M. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup > "Dixonian69" <Dixonian69@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:6245F0C8-483C-43C2-895F-9DA251EFCE37@microsoft.com... >> There is the "quick launch toolbar" that displays at botttom next to >> "start". rt click on task bar, then Toolbars, and select Quick >> Launch.
