XP having trouble handling disc and cd drives

I am running XP sp2. Everything worked perfectly on my machine until the
last two weeks. First I noted that Win Explorer would lock up (go to 100%
memory) whenever I tried to access information on the CD-R drive. I thought
pehaps the Drive had gone bad and replaced it with a DVD_R. It worked
perfectly until today when the new drive again locked up exporer. Just for
grins I tried to access a file on the floppy drive and the same thing
happened. I was able to restore to a prior time and restart the computer
and Windows was able to read from the drive--for now.

has anyone came accros this problem and is there anyway I can troubleshoot
the system?
