The pc is a 3 year old DELL running Windows XP Home Edition. It is my
daughter's pc that she has at college. She powered it off after it would not shut down and seemed to "freeze". It will boot up in safe mode. Did she clobber her user profile? What else could cause this to occur and how do I fix it this weekend? Any help would be appreciated. |

But that's almost always my guess when we haven't any information to go on. What sort of problems are you getting if you try to log on to the account? If it's a corrupt profile then see the bottom link... I really think the first guess would be malware without any real information besides saying it froze. What more info can you feed us? Galen, Thanks for the info.
I'm sorry I can't give any additional info at this time as I am about a 1 1/2 hour drive away from her college. This is all the info she has provided. I will drive there this weekend and try to help her out. We are attempting to find all the CDs that came with her pc when we bought it 3 years ago. If I need to re-install windows; Can I do this in Safe Mode from disk images that are probably stored on her hard drive somewhere? If so, any help on this would be appreciated. THANKS AGAIN! Have you tried running System Restore from Safe Mode?

After you've done a complete cleaning according to Galen's post and
while still in Safe Mode, try to do a System Restore. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore -- XP-WNP Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Activation is mandatory. Does the error message refer to registration or to activation? Ron Martell Duncan B.C. Now that I am on-site, it said Windows needs to be ACTIVATED. It could NOT
connect to the internet because it could not detect the connection and I do NOT have a cable for dial-up connection. I tried a restore from last good copy while in SAFE Mode and now I get three error windows that pop-up while re-booting. The messages are: Winlogon.exe Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point RegisterFormCLSID could not be located in the dynamic link library ole32.dll. This window comes up twice. The third window is: services.exe Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point RegisterScmCallback could not be located in the dynamic link library umpnpmgr.dll. PLEASE HELP.. Any ideas what to do now? "Ron Martell" wrote: > OMD <OMD@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >The pc is a 3 year old DELL running Windows XP Home Edition. This window comes up twice. That message would normally indicate that the ole32.dll file was an incorrect (= older) version and that you need to replace it with an updated version that contains the newer code including the entry point RegisterFormCLSID. > >The third window is: services.exe Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry >point RegisterScmCallback could not be located in the dynamic link library >umpnpmgr.dll. > Again this indicates that the file umpnpmgr.dll is an outdated version that does not contain the code required by whatever application is accessing the file. I can find no references to these specific error messages and entry points on the web or at microsoft.com. One reference I did find was with regard to a file named umpnpmgr.hp.dll rather than umpnpmgr.dll. If these progblems persist then my only suggestion would be to do a repair install of your Windows XP as per the instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C. Ron,
DELL online support indicated that my daughter picked up the netsky.d virus. Because of me, her Norton Anti-virus was out of date (Norton 2003). I have not reached Symantec yet but suspect that they will not help. I do have a current version (Norton 2005) on my home pc. I suspect that I will need to re-install all of the software that came with the DELL Dimension 2350. I have the Windows XP Home Edition CD as well as MS Office software that I paid extra for. Is it just a matter of placing the Windows XP Home Edition CD in the disc drive and booting up? Is this how I go about restoring tbe pc? Should I then download SP2 for XP Home and install it once I can get internet connectivity on the machine? Thanks for all your help. Any other things to ponder would be appreciated so much.
