I think there are some knowledgable people here on Windows XP, so I
want to ask something since I think I have much to learn, and here`s my question- The other day while using my laptop with Windows XP Home sp2, I saw my computer do something I had never saw any computer do. My computer blinked, some horizonital lines appeared and went to the desktop, my wallpaper went horizonital on my screen. I restarted the computer and it was sill messed up. I shut it down, and several minutes later when I turned it on,it was still horizontal-with my taskbar on the right edge of the screen. I deceided I would take it in for repairs, but overnight I deceided I would try to reinstall win xp myself,(I tried an upgrade first and that didn`t work, and my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1150 which I like) but it dosent have as many buttons, to adjust the display like a desktop computer has, only the power button, and one for DellAccess Direct. Well I accomplished the re-install and now it works fine, but I would like to know if the re-install was needed, and if I could have fixed it without re-installing. James Thank You |

You probably did the only thing you could. I had version of XP before they
added SP2. I constantly had to redo the computer every 2 to 3 months. I hada motherboard failure and replaced the mother board and the operating system would work only two or three days before I had to format and reload the system. Most of the "experts" on this web news board assured me that there was nothing wrong with the operating system. I bought a new system and installed it last April and have had no trouble with it since. Don't know what you are into but it is possible that you got into a bootleg windows xp disk. If you keep having trouble it might be that you have to completely replace the xp system with a new one Luckeyo "James" <moore_guys@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:1132991744.382380.3110@g49g2000cwa.googlegrou ps.com... >I think there are some knowledgable people here on Windows XP, so I > want to ask something since I think I have much to learn, and here`s my > > question- > > The other day while using my laptop with Windows XP Home sp2, I saw my > computer do something > I had never saw any computer do. It's a great possibility that you by perchance pressed the combo keys that
rotate the screen. Right click the desktop. Click Properties > Settings tab > Advanced button. Check the different tabs/settings for Rotate. -- Brian A. You could probably have fixed the screen without the re-install, provided all that happened was your screen was rotated. it sounds like you have no Antivirus and Firewall installed, which allowed some malicious code to alter the resolution or orientation of the screen. You need to protect your computer; recommend a solid Internet Security Suite such as Norton Internet Security. Bobby |

Reinstalls are hardly ever needed to fix things. > and if I could have fixed it without re-installing. It's a feature of your video card, not a problem to fix. Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties. Look around there for the setting to rotate the screen. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup |
