Default scam

I presume that a lot of people must have come across this scam, since it
happened to me and I am extremely careful on the internet.
I got my phonebill and see a ONE minute call for 25 $, 1 minute duration
..Service Romance.
I complain to the phone Cie. They say ,they can`t do anything.
They say...I must have been on a website and gotten in touch with this Cie.
I can honestly say,...I have not done that... I am the only user of this
computer.
My question is.
l.- How current is this scam ?
2.- Is it possible to successfully fight the Phone cie.?
3.-How does this scam work exactly ?
4-How can it be prevented.
Thanks for your help.
Phil

Default RE: scam

you have dialup service?
why do you think they were made via Web?
are there kids at home?

have you complained to your phone company?
or tried to dispute that way?

Scumware can install dialers.

dialers
Programs that use a computer or modem to dial out to a toll number or
internet site, typically to accrue charges. Dialers can be installed with or
without a user’s explicit knowledge, and may perform their dialing activity
without a user’s specific consent prior to dialing.

Dialer: A program that, often secretly, changes your dialup connection
setting so that instead of calling your local internet provider, your PC
calls are routed to an expensive 0900 or international phone number.

Get some anti-spyware programs and scan your machine for scumware.

Download, install, run, update and run again. They are all
good, FREE utilities. Make sure you update every program, even if you
just downloaded it. You must have the latest updates. Without updates,
you have a gun without ammo. You also need to use more than one
anti scumware program. One program will *not* catch everything.

1) SpywareBlaster
[[SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from
ever being installed.
The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And
SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.]]

Probably, sounds like a drive-by modem hijacking from some website's
spyware.

There are literally hundreds of dialers that are installed upon a computer
by visiting porn web sites. Did you ever download that "free" player to view
a porn video. It was probably a dialer.
