hibernate

My computer used to have the Hibernate feature. I re-installed Win XP pro and
now there is no hibernate feature! What happend? Any one help!!! I don't
understand this. Thanks

Hi Cesar,

You have not yet installed all the supporting drivers - video, sound,
motherboard, etc. Once you have installed full driver sets and are not
relying on WinXP-supplied ones you should regain that function.

I may be oversimplifying, but try Power Properties->Hibernate tab->
Enable hibernation checkbox.

Right click on the Desktop
Select 'Properties' from the dropdown menu
Click on 'Screen Saver' Tab
Click on 'Power' Button

select 'Hibernate tab' from Power Properties
Enable hibernation checkbox.

Hello Rick "Nutcase",

Thanks for the advice. It was video driver that was missing. After
installing it, I got the hibernate tab on the power settings. Not logical but
it worked. Thanks again!

No problem. And actually, what you've experienced is not all that unusual. A
quick explanation:

In order for hibernate to function, it requires that all the hardware on the
system support that function. Hardware relies on device drivers, and needs a
full driver set that allows it to comply with that function. When you do a
fresh installation of windows, what you get are windows-supplied drivers
that allow for basic functionality of most of the hardware - the goal is
that the system boots and loads windows. Do not confuse these win-supplied
drivers for the full driver set, usually suppied by the manufacturer of the
hardware. Until this full set is installed certain features, like hibernate,
will not be available as the hardware does not currently support it.

Thanks for the explanation. It now does make more sense.

More questions. I have assigned the sleep keyboard button to hibernate on
demand. However, the computer does not hibernate after a timetable set nor it
does not go on standby. The monitor does not turn off either (just screen
saver). I downloaded the video driver specific for the motherboard (from the
manufacturer) as well as the sound driver. There are no question marks on the
device manager.
What should I do?

Hi Cesar,

Just because there are no bangs (question marks) in device manager does not
mean that everything is fully functional. If hibernate is now available,
that is a good start. However, if it is not functioning it indicates that
either some driver is still not fully supporting it, or that there is
interference from some application or background process.
