Default WMI has encountered a problem - wmiprvse.exe

I have a client with a Dell running Windows XP Home SP2 that gets an error
message "WMI has encountered a problem...". It seems to be associated with
Windows Update. If auto updates are enabled, the message seems to appear
each time Windows XP checks for updates. Even when trying to do manual
updates, the Windows Update process gets "hung up" and can not be completed.
I have tried some Google searches, but couldn't find anything that seems to
be a similar problem. Hopefully, some one in this newsgroup has encountered
the same problem and knows of a fix. I have tried to follow instruction to
rebuild the Repository, but I can not delete some of the files. Any help
would be appreciated.

Check with your client to see what firewall he is running. Perhaps he
has denied something needed by Windows Updates. Otherwise, you might
try posting in a newsgroup for Windows Updates issues. Here's a list of
