Default DNS (?) problem--can't ping

This is cross-posted from the help list where I asked for help with
e-mail. Occured to me that this area was more suitable.

Strange problem: The computer I am working on cannot send or receive
mail. Says the server does not respond (also says it can't find it).
Tried to ping the mail servers. No luck. Yes, they are up--can ping
from another computer.
I can ping 127.0.0.1 with success. Any other ping fails. Can't even
ping 192.168.0.1--the router)

Returns error: Ping transmit failed, code=65--indicative of ICS
enabled or ZoneAlarm active. Neither is the case.

Can't flush DNS--fails.
I can get out on the internet, however. No problem there.
Tried Outlook and Outlook Express with same results.
DNS is running on the computer.
O/S XP Home. SP2 installed.

Been beating my head against the keyboard and am afraid I might damage
it!!!

You have to have the DNS Client service running in order for
ipconfig /displaydns and ipconfig /flushdns to work properly.

C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

Windows IP Configuration

Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution.

Look familiar?

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DNS Client | Set Startup type
to Automatic | Click Apply | Click the Start button | Click OK

Familiar? Yes.
Problem is, the DNS Client is already running and set to Automatic.

OK--problem solved. There was a program called EZtrust EZ Firewall by
Computer Associates on the machine. Said it wasn't running. Had
expired. Couldn't delete it.
Finally deleted all its files and then tried to uninstall it. McAfee
resisted--you had to answer its question a certain way.
Actually got in uninstalled and now the system is working.
Thanks for your help.
